THE COLLAPSE OF ENGLISH LIT AT COLUMBIA
Powerline ^ | 08/22/19

Posted on 08/22/2019 8:31:48 AM PDT by Liberty7732

Scenes from the higher education apocalypse: I don’t know whether Columbia University’s graduate program in English literature is as premier in the field as it was back in the glory days of Lionel Trilling, but yesterday the Chronicle of Higher Education reported this:

Columbia Had Little Success Placing English Ph.Ds on Tenure Track. “Alarm” Followed, and the University Responded

The story is unfortunately behind the Chronicle‘s paywall, but when you get into the story it turns out the headline is misleading: It should read “No Success” rather than “Little Success,” because the number of Columbia English Ph.Ds placed in tenure-tracked jobs this year was Zero.

The news was grim. Columbia University’s English department had failed to place a single current Ph.D. candidate into a tenure-track job this year. And 19 new doctoral students had accepted admission into the program, raising questions about why the cohort is so large when the job prospects aren’t plentiful. This had “given rise to some alarm,” concerned graduate students wrote in an April 30 letter to department leadership.

Not to worry. Columbia is on it!

You mean he didn't get Tenured?

Dark and lonely, summer night
Kill my landlord, kill my landlord

Watchdog barking, do he bite?
Kill my landlord, kill my landlord

Slip in window, break his neck
Did his house I start to wreck

Kill my landlord
Kill my landlord
C-I-L-L My Land-Lord

English Lit is oppressive cultural imperialism.

Indigenous pre-Columbian Inca love poetry is where its at.

The word “woke” used in the way it is used shows the ignorance of the left both to history and grammar. Somebody saying “I am woke” is an ignorant man. He is saying lets skip the rules of civilized society and discourse. Lets act as ignorant men and show white people that we side with the ignorant, uneducated colored people and use their slang as if it was 1820 in the Southern states. Lets raise nigger Jim from Huck Finn to president because he’ll do a better job as president than Trump. Let’s bludgeon you with our pretense to ignorance and stupidity... because it is a pretense. It is a pretense with a purpose. And the purpose is, “You follow us because you have white guilty and your racist sins will be absolved if you vote democrat.” It’s deceit and conceit wrapped up in one big ball.

And it’s coming from the university like Columbia. And people “just don’t want no part of it. No. No. Masa.”

The key phrase is "tenure track". Lots of universities are saving money by hiring adjunct professors who are essentially glorified TAs. They get lower salaries, few or no benefits, and no job security.

After all, universities have to save money so they can hire more useless administrators, build more luxury dorms, and hand out million dollar payouts to deans and famous guest lecturers who are selected more for marketing purposes than education.

Anyone majoring in English or worse, English Lit; should expect to have zero job prospects.

If they happen to survive the program of studies and aren’t too off-the-wall and/or socially awkward, there may be a spot as am $80K Assistant Principal at a public high school somewhere if they also go out and secure a teaching certificate, and didn’t engage in enough devilment in their English Major days to be disqualified from being able to secure child protection clearances.

I love that clip. Especially in the context it was presented, so liberal.

But that doesn’t allow you teach at most 6 classes a week, have a TA, grader, sit back in your tweed jacket, exude profound wisdom and moral concern, bask in the warm glow of adoring undergraduates (who in this case are mostly female and above the age of consent!)

No joke, their use of the word shows a 2nd grade grasp of English. People who use it are the same types that can’t use plurals properly. (”Three dollar and forty-eight cent.”) Normal people aren’t going to take you seriously when you talk like Tonto. It’s the same morons that think “aks” is a word.

They have the same job prospects as those who attain a Masters in Puppetry (I kid you not).

Yeah, there’s a few English majors where I work. They work in parts logistics and they’re pissed off that nobody takes their degree seriously and they’re on the bottom of the middle-band of salaries (making a little more than the shop mechanics but nowhere near Engineering and IT).

The same people think “disrespect” can be used as verb.

Now, now. My favorite line in that tripe, Falling Down, the movie, is the Korean guy saying, "Fie dollah!"

The movie went downhill after that. Along with Michael Douglas' career.

From the original article:

"Tiana Reid, a sixth-year Ph.D. candidate in English who signed the letter, said in an email that she’s “not particularly worried about my future place in the academy as I have never expected the university offer any kind of refuge or even knowledge."

She never expected to receive any knowledge in her PhD program? What was she expecting?

“Images” by Tyrone Green.

Norman Mailer discovered him in prison.

Still better than anything Maya Angelou wrote.
