Decades of Intensifying Left-Wing Influence on High School Students

As a senior in high school, I dated a gorgeous girl. On our first date, she was sitting on my lap. I thought, "My life is now perfect!" Then she started spouting some Marxist gibberish. I began disputing with her. No more kisses. I stood up and walked off her porch, never to see her again! That was at the end of the 1950s.

Fast-forward about forty years to 1997. I had transferred into a high school for gifted students in New York City, one of those specialized high schools with high Asian and white enrollments, and ever diminishing black and Hispanic enrollments. It was one of a group of schools that require students to pass a difficult examination for admittance. At that time, the enrollment of black and Hispanic students ranged at around 30–35%, whereas today it is in the 10–12% range.

During the first week of the school year before classes began, teachers gathered in departments to review plans for teaching their subjects. The U.S. history teachers gathered in a room. It was my first week, and within a few minutes, it came to my attention that the teachers in the room all planned on regularly distributing excerpts from Howard Zinn's bestselling college textbook A People's History of the United States. Suddenly, I realized I was in a dark coven of male commies. Collectively, purposely, and without hesitation, they were agreeing on teaching that American history was a betrayal of the people by the power-mad white capitalist elite. Our history was presumably a history of oppression, suppression, and exploitation of "the people."

This is WHY once enough of us pass on this country is going to become Venezuela. Millenials and the upcoming generation are steeped in Socialism. They think it’s just peachy. And every day a few more of them reach the age of majority.

My brother actually transferred out of a college because every girl he met there was a raving radical feminist.

Our education system is one of the primary reasons that our country is in the fast slide to hell. It probably will not be too bad for the rest of my life, but I am very concerned for my grandchildren.

I noticed that. However if I had the gorgeous girl sitting on my lap in high school, I would have gotten through that too, regardless of her ideology.

LOL, well you sure blew it!! No debates, no talking. As soon as she started that crap you ask her if she ever played “hide the pepperoni” and move on from there.

Many “educators” at all levels abuse children through their constant LIB idiocy that they spout under the guise of “education”. What incredible losers. They should be kept away from children.

My SIL is ending her 36 year HS teaching position this year.

All the younger teachers are flat out liberal and socialist and the students are getting more liberal every year.

She has a new granddaughter and the plan is sending her to a private school.

The principal at one of our local public schools sends his kids to a Catholic school. What does that tell ya?

I have a family member who annoys all of us because he’s a public school teacher who is very conservative in his views.

However, despite this he reliably votes Democrat because his union tells him to.

It’s all about the pensions, dontcha know.

School reform, competition, choice, will hve multiple positive effects.
1) Kids will learn more and be better qualified
2) Costs will decrease saving taxpayers THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS PER YEAR to be saved or spent boosting the economy.
3) Liberal indoctrination will decrease dramatically.
4) Inner city kids will finally have hope.

Re Howard Zinn: Can anyone recommend two things: (1) a short, article length critique of Zinn suitable for bright high school and college students; and (2) a longer, book length treatment of the same subject suitable for a student who gets into a sustained contest with a Zinncult leftie instructor. I'd like to find something that is scathing but in an intellectually serious way. Dripping with contempt would be good. I know some rising students who could use such a resource right now. I have worn myself out trying to explain the difference between a serious historian and a dishonest agitprop confabulator, but I've never researched the contra-Zinn literature. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

I'd also appreciate recommendations on the best current one volume surveys of U.S. history.

Hi, LS!

Do you have one?

Levin lurks here sometimes, so maybe he has one, too.
