The needle on the CTH winnamometer momentarily pegs too much
[Backstory Here] After quite widespread discussion on the Energy Star Thermostat Report, and the ridiculous recommendations to set thermostat to 82° when sleeping, the U.S. Department of Energy (Secretary Rick Perry) issued the following statement:
It is the position of DOE that Americans should set their thermostats to whatever temperature they choose...

Commonsense. About time. Now, will he fire the people who have been telling us to freeze in the winter and now bake in the summer?

Perry is not presidential material. He is perfect where he is. It is his bailiwick.

I am no mathematician and certainly no expert at thermodynamics but it seems to me that if you set your thermostat to in the 80s at night all the heat that leaks into your home will just have to be driven out again when you reset it to 78 or whatever in the morning so you wont have actually accomplished anything. If everybody did it I suppose you could shift the brown out from afternoon to morning, maybe.

I wonder how many people turned their thermostats up to 82 at night after this advice came out? And how many with the auto cool/heat did so and had the heater on at night to maintain 82 degrees?

It is the position of DOE that Americans should set their thermostats to whatever temperature they choose. A statement that, if followed philosophically by every Federal agency, would lead to general well being and contentment in the country.

I am not sure about regular air conditioners but with heat pumps you are spot on. Lowering temp uses oodles more energy than keeping steady in the summer.

This just shows that the EPA is still controlled by leftist radicals. The head of the EPA let this idiotic guideline go out which is a bad sign indeed.

If you like your thermostat setting, you can keep your thermostat setting.
To: gibsonguy
It’s not just the EPA.
Check out what NYSEG is doing in NYS with its so-called Smart Savings program, where it bribes consumers into letting NYSEG control the consumers’ smart thermostats.
The EPA thing is the least of it.

Perry strikes me as a contemporary Jack Kemp minus the supply-side chops and football pedigree. I think the late Jack Kemp would have been an excellent Presidential candidate - certainly he was the high point of the Dole-Kemp ticket.
But we are in a knife fight nowadays and we need a cannon like Trump.

With all air conditioners, heat pumps or otherwise, they operate at higher efficiency when the outside temperature is cooler, so, if you have a well-insulated house then it is more efficient to lower the temperature at night when the external temperature is cooler.
The fact that far too many houses are poorly insulated is another problem. That one has been a false economy in construction for 50 years.

I don’t. Given that he famously mentored Paul Ryan I would say we dodged a bullet with Kemp.
