The Danish royal family was surprised after President Trump scrapped a planned visit to Denmark following comments by the country's prime minister that the idea the U.S. might buy Greenland from them was absurd.
Trump had been expected to visit Denmark on Sept. 2-3 as part of his trip to Europe, but until his tweets Tuesday, there were no solid indications the visit was centered on buying Greenland.
"Denmark is a very special country with incredible people, but based on Prime Minister Mette Frederiksens comments, that she would have no interest in discussing the purchase of Greenland, I will be postponing our meeting scheduled in two weeks for another time," Trump wrote.
The White House later clarified that the entire trip to Denmark had been scrapped, including a planned meeting with Denmark's Queen Margrethe II.
The cancellation of the visit left the Danish royal family flabbergasted, while other politicians said the snub was deeply insulting.
It [the cancellation] was a surprise -- we have nothing more to say about this case, said Lene Balleby, head of communications for the Danish royal family.
Helle Thorning-Schmidt, a former prime minister, tweeted that Trump's cancellation was deeply insulting to the people of Greenland and Denmark, while ex-foreign minister Martin Lidegaard told Danish broadcaster TV2 that the situation was a diplomatic farce and slammed Trump for grotesque behavior.
Total chaos, the former finance minister Kristian Jensen wrote. This has gone from a great opportunity for a strengthened dialogue between allies to a diplomatic crisis.
Pernille Skipper, the speaker of Parliaments leftist red-green alliance, tweeted that Trump lives on another planet, adding that hes smug and disrespectful.

Trump Might Want to Buy Greenland But His Nemesis, China, Is There Before Him
I would invest in production of green MGGA hats
—
Ooh! Except the misspelling of MAGA, that’s a GREAT idea.
I hope someone does it!
Greenlanders would do it for half that amount.
Make Greenland Great Again. Green MGGA hats. I did not misspell.
I think that even we forget sometimes that Trump knows what he is doing. If Greenland is really available, Donald Trump is about the last person in the world who would screw up a potential sweetheart deal like this. I am confident that Donald Trump can construct a win-win-win deal for the U.S., Denmark, and Greenland. The big-time loser would be China who apparently has eyes on increasing influence in Greenland.
The Chinese are going to outbid us. I thought this through. Damn shame for them they have the Hong Kong kerfuffle right now. $5 million is fair. Greenland is worth TRILLIONS.
Too bad for them let them fume. They tried to embarrass with their public comments.
The people who leaked this damaged America’s security.
Greenland is a treasure trove of precious metal deposits and other minerals and precious ruby stone deposits, increasingly revealed by glacial melt.
The Russians want it for both exploration and strategic reasons.
There is no reason that it cannot be purchased, except that the Danish administration has been embarrassed by the disclosure of their initial discussions.
PDJT will stand by and watch the Danish government go bankrupt, and then buy even cheaper. The president has method to his alleged “madness.”
The Danes approached PDJT back channel for a sale, to fill their socialist program depleted national coffers.
Perhaps I was incorrect about Greenlanders specifically wanting to become part of the U,S.
But if they did become independent they'd risk lowering their standards of living, so joining the U.S. would probably be a more logical option, if they felt that as the best way to diversify their economy.
They have a lot of guts. Practically freeloading on the U.S. for military security forever; and then snivelling that a change of travel plans might hurt relations.
Jimmy Hoffa?
The Danes can pick up their own defense tab against the Chinese.
You know, the nation cruising around and beginning to be threatening.
Trump isn’t going to defend the Danes for free.
Wars just because the powers in charge don’t defend their people are over in the Trump era.
The Danes don’t get an apology.
And very likely the 58,000 folks in Greenland aren’t going to like becoming Chinese.
Sell Greenland to the US, which apparently90% of the local residents want, and all will be happy.
The dirty little secret that Denmark, Greenland, and Trump knows is that the Chinese have plans to basically take Greenland for themselves. Trump is playing an end around game.
The Don doesn’t ask a second favor once he’s been refused the first, understood?

You bet your ass they are going to want to be US citizens, home ruled of course. Hell you could almost fly the entire population to Guam or the Virgin Islands to see what it is like being a territory.
“But whats worth knowing is what precipitated the presidents comments. In 2017, Greenlands prime minister flew to China and asked, as the Journal reported in February of this year, Chinese state-run banks to finance the new commercial airports, including a big one for one of the smallest capitals on earth, Nuuk, which can now be served only by propeller planes. The bankers were interested, people at the meetings said, so long as a Chinese company constructed the airports.
Reports indicate this action was triggered by Denmark refusing to help.
Then-Secretary of Defense James N. Mattis was not happy and convinced Danish officials to fund the infrastructure, sidelining China. This was an effort by China starting in 2018 and only ending when they officially withdrew in June of this year. For those who look past their shallow view of the United States and the administration, one would know its no coincidence that the presidents remarks on Greenland became public just two months after we successfully fought off China in their latest swing at the North American island.”

I'm guessing that, as a word, 'irony' has no meaning in Danish.
