Trump called NRA chief to tell him universal background checks are off the table

President Trump called National Rifle Association (NRA) CEO Wayne LaPierre on Tuesday to tell him that universal background checks for gun purchases are off the table, The Atlantic reported.

The decision to oppose an initiative that has strong support in public polling signals an apparent backtracking by the president from initial comments he made following two mass shootings earlier this month in El Paso, Texas, and Dayton, Ohio, that left 31 dead.

Trump at the time indicated support for legislation on “meaningful background checks,” saying the issue was not a question of the NRA or political partisanship.

“On background checks, we have tremendous support for really common-sense, sensible, important background checks,” Trump told reporters on Aug. 9 following the shootings.

However, Trump reportedly no longer supports the initiative.

“He was cementing his stance that we already have background checks and that he’s not waffling on this anymore,” a source told The Atlantic with regard to Trump's phone call with LaPierre on Tuesday. “He doesn’t want to pursue it.”

Life member but weary of Lapierre. We need character and ability to serve members instead of ones own pockets. Steve Hilton had a discussion on Lapierre this past Saturdaym.

Altho I believe in the NRA, until Wayne LaPierre is thrown out, I refuse to send them any more money for membership of extra support. That crook has got to be thrown out.

No. Get the government OUT of gun regulation. 100% of gun laws are unconstitutional. Repeal all of them.

Dems and their media continue to screw up their goals.

How?... By adding terms like “universal” to background checks and “comprehensive” to immigration reform.

Universal background checks is code for jail the guy who loans his brother/father a gun to shoot.

To those who support this bullshit, THAT is what they are pushing for. Never support anything leftists support. Never.

I heard that they are going to improve the existing background check system. And from what I know, it is a seriously flawed system that just checks people’s names and phonetic variations - it doesn’t cross reference their name to any kind of ID or residence or birthdate even though you have to provide this information. And that ends up with millions of false positives. When they say “background checks stopped 3 million prohibited people from buying guns” they are selling us a load of bull. If that were true, there should be 3 million prosecutions of prohibited people trying to buy a gun. The truth is, the vast majority of those are just people with a similar name to a prohibited person. Unfortunately for many, they are turned away and have to fix the error sometimes at great personal expense. As usual, a government program disproportionately harms the poor and minorities as they are the least able to pay the lawyers required to clear their name; and they are more likely to have a common sounding name.

That’s not it at all. He is a master of the rope-a-dope for both sides. Pisses the right off with suggestions that makes the left happy to settle them down. When the event subsides or some other crap starts pushing the tragedy behind, he switches back to his base.

How about ending deadly gun free zones and recognizing national reciprocity?

IMHO, the only Red Flag bill that PDJT will agree to is one that guarantees due process (pre-accused confronts accuser in court before any seizure takes place) and mandates that false accusations result in harsh penalties including prison time, fines, and paying of all court costs.

That isn't what Congress is drafting, and according to several Senators, Trump had called many of them in private over the last 3 weeks and given his support for their "Red Flag Law."

From what I have read, what Congress wants to pass will supply billions of dollars to the states so that they can enact their own "Red Flag Laws" and apply enforcement.

Several states already have "Red Flag Laws", and several gun owners have already been murdered by SWAT teams on no-knock raids.

Other gun owners have had their guns taken from them because an ex-wife, girlfriend, family member, neighbor, or anonymous person called the police - - and that was all she wrote.

Those targeted will have to spend hundreds of thousands of dollars in legal fees in an attempt to get their guns back, and the prospects are dim.

Trump's "guarantee" about Red Flag Laws won't mean anything. States will operate they way they want - once the get the Federal money.

If Trump signs a "Red Flag Law", he might as well sign his own resignation. People who voted for him in 2016 will just stay home. It's human nature, you won't support someone who abused and lied to you on such a sacred issue.

But, perhaps there is some good news. The latest I have read is that Congress is getting ticked, thinking Trump will waiver on signing what they send him.

I had high hopes for National Reciprocity in the early days of the Trump administration. After all, we had the House, the Senate, the Presidency!

There was a meeting (I say it, on camera) where Steve Scalise proposed adding National Reciprocity to a bill.

On camera, Trump dismissed it out of hand.

I was shocked, and disappointed.

With Nancy running the House, it will NEVER, EVER happen.

He also "doesn't like" silencers, and (in violation of statutory law) banned bump-stocks.

Trust Trump?

Not on this topic ...
