Family physicians group urges passage of gun violence prevention bills
concordmonitor.com ^ | 8/20/2019 | MELISSA DUXBURY and CATRINA WATSON

Two weeks ago, the New Hampshire Academy of Family Physicians sent Gov. Chris Sununu a letter that implored him to sign three gun violence prevention bills, House Bills 514, 109, and 564. Instead, the governor vetoed all three. At this point, we urge the House and Senate to overturn his veto and pass these critical bills into law.

After the governor’s veto of these bills, we feel the need to write this piece to illuminate why we think these measures are so important to our state and nation. As family physicians, we see the consequences of gun violence every day in our practices. Although the media may consider the immediate horror that we all feel, it is the physicians who see the long-term consequences. We see the parent of the child who died by suicide, the children of the police officers shot on duty, and the families of victims of all gun violence. We see many of them for the rest of their lives. As physicians, we must stand up for public health and the communities we serve. Gun violence is a matter of public health and it is critical that our society treats it as such. Just as reducing drunk driving deaths didn’t require banning cars or alcohol, we can save lives through preventive strategies that let us live more safely with things that can cause harm.

Guess no one considered that the Gov was a tad smarter than the legislators in realizing passing laws to show that you "did something" is a waste of time and tax payer dollars. And the docs weighing in just proves that not everyone graduates med school at the top of the class. One would think they might take up vehicle violence or knife violence or baseball bat violence or fist violence or medical "misadventures".

Medical schools are just schools like any other. They have been completely infiltrated by leftists.

Violence is not a characteristic of guns.

Violence is a characteristic of people.

Oh sure. Now you sound like PDJT trying to assign blame to the trigger puller instead of the trigger. You people. LOL! :-)

It was the medical community, and their belief in blood letting, that killed George Washington. He probably would have survived his bout of quincy were it not for that.

They always believe they know best, but make mistakes like anyone else.

” And the docs weighing in just proves that not everyone graduates med school at the top of the class. “

I’m guessing that this is some lefty organization run by an activist. I’ll check.

I knew of one that blamed the phone company when his patient put call blocking on his phone. They put out an unlimited amount of effort to get where they are and will can’t understand others who are on a different page.

Perhaps if “family physicians” did their jobs and referred patients with psychological/psychiatric disorders for treatment commensurate with the type and severity of the disorder stuff like this wouldn't happen.

I really think it’s great to pass laws that make it safer while, at the same time, don’t trounce on the rights of the individual. However, this is not a federal issue. It is a state, county and city issue.

Doctors kill more people than assault weapons

That’s because assault weapons are smart enough to avoid doctor visits. :)

A medical doctor’s opinions about guns are no more important than a McDonalds employee’s opinion. In fact given the brainwashing in colleges the doctor’s is probably worth less.

"Just as reducing drunk driving deaths didn’t require banning cars or alcohol, we can save lives through preventive strategies that let us live more safely with things that can cause harm."

This analogy needs some consideration and analysis. I don't have my hands around it fully.

The state did pass laws which curbed the consumption of alcohol in bars.

The state increased surveilance of and action against persons driving drunk.

The state did not take away cars, nor did it impair the ability of persons to own and possess and operate cars generally.

“supports universal background checks, extreme risk protection orders, waiting periods, and gun-free school zones.”

All bad but the worst here is extreme protection orders (red flag). Only the worst cases at first, but then we will have the Kavanagh effect.

One accusation by doctor, police, social worker, etc and you’re out. Then off course fbi will be looking at social media posts for domestic “terrorists”.

No “family physician” is going to know from me that I own “assault weapons”.
