ec President says call for removal without alternative proposal signals support for hard border

Donald Tusk has rejected Boris Johnson’s request to strip the backstop out of the Brexit deal, with a thinly-veiled message that the British government was refusing to admit the lack of realistic alternatives.

...Tusk wrote: “The backstop is an insurance to avoid a hard border on the island of Ireland unless and until an alternative is found. Those against the backstop and not proposing realistic alternatives in fact support re-establishing a border. Even if they do not admit it.”

...A spokeswoman for the commission welcomed the UK government’s “engagement and commitment to an orderly withdrawal” while making clear its objections. “We also note that the letter does not provide a legal operational solution to prevent the return of a hard border on the island of Ireland. It does not set out what any alternative arrangements could be and in fact it recognises that there is no guarantee that such arrangements will be in place by the end of the transitional period.”

...The senator also ruled out a time limit on the backstop: “It is an insurance policy to protect a very fragile peace deal, therefore it needs the buy in of both sides, because both the British and Irish government are co-guarantors of that Good Friday agreement.”

...The backstop is consistent with the Good Friday agreement and does not undermine the constitutional status of Northern Ireland, an analysis London shared during and after negotiations, the source said. “It’s disappointing that the British government cannot stand over the commitment it gave in 2017 and 2018.”

The headline is misleading. It needs to include Tusk after Donald. I thought what is Donald Trump doing in Brexit negotiations?

Ten bucks says that Tusk wept like a baby when he learned that the USSR had collapsed. But now he's signed on with the USSR 2.0 so all is well in his mind. He's proud to take orders from an East German hausfrau.

“Cronos” is a rabid supporter of the USSR 2.0 (aka: The European Union) and as such he quotes The Guardian regularly. One wonders if he might be lost when posting here...thinking that he's posting for the DUmpster Kids.

Nice, why don’t you take your slurs to DU where they belong.

Brexit is not a pro or anti conservative matter. The Tory party in the UK is ROI abortion and pro gay marriage. No different from Merkel’s government.

You haven’t figured out that Brexit m whether leave or remain is not related to the goals of conservatives either way.

What makes you think the Tories are conservative in anything besides their name?

Didn’t you read how the Farage Brexit party has communists and the Tory chancellor is of Muslim origin?

What policy of theirs is remotely aligned with conservatives?

The EU has flaws, deep flaws, #1 being not putting Jesus at the forefront.

But the Tories and leave are no better.
