Chinese missiles likely to cripple Asia-based US forces in event of conflict: report
South China Morning Post ^ | August 18, 2019 | Bhavan Jaipragas

If an armed conflict broke out between Beijing and Washington, China’s hi-tech ballistic missiles would likely cripple the United States’ military bases and naval fleet across the Western Pacific region within hours, a new report by Australia-based researchers has said.

With China making rapid technological advancements and sharpening its hard power, the report urged the US and regional allies such as Australia and Japan to overhaul military investment and deployment plans, or face the prospect of American “military primacy” being undermined by the Asian power.

Mmmm, the Japanese aren’t that harmless and if you think the Germans are, well, you haven’t been paying attention to their assembling a new Euro empire in the form of the EU.

Some would say that Vietnam didn’t have the ability to win an armed conflict with the US.

Apples and oranges.

With hindsight I do not believe the goal of the US was to WIN, but to tie up communist resources for as long as possible.

You can not really believe that if the government wanted to wage total war (think WWII) that North Viet Nam would have lasted more than a month?

Every war we have engaged in since the end of WWII have been purposefully limited. Reasons can be given why this was done (some I may agree with some I may disagree with) but the point is we have not engaged in total war since WWII.

If China attacks US military bases anywhere in the world, it would be a blatant act of war which would result in WWIII.

Something most nations would rather avoid.

WWI was such a stupid war that changed the world. The various powers thought they could control and contain it but like a forest fire out of control it continued until it burned itself out.

WWII was a direct result of WWI (again ignorant politicians making decisions way out of their pay grade). You could add to the list of conflicts that came out of the decisions made at the end of the first WW and the collapse of the colonial powers and the mess they made of the nations they once ruled.

With China wanting to become a new Colonial power they have to have a strong military and the ability to project force around the world. But today is not the same as the 1700s when the European colonial powers could conquer and rule vast empires.

In a war with China the US could shut down all shipping to and from China. The US could destroy their industries.

The US would not need to invade or occupy China to win.

So Apples and Oranges. The US did not set out to win in Viet Nam but a war with China would require we cripple them to the point they were no longer a threat and that is doable.

The Chinese had the Boxer rebellion which is like our Boston tea party and border wars all in one but worse.

The Brits were doping them up with opium and using them.
We got caught in the middle.

They kicked us out and walled up.

You are assuming the US has the will to win.

I can almost guarantee that China’s paid off enough Republican Congresscritters to make us back off should we take any casualties. And all the Dems would bow immediately.

Vietnam is a special place.

Really. I have been here now three years. In those three years, I have run into TWO Vietnamese who seemed racist.

I am completely serious. Two.

I have never, in my entire life, been anywhere like this.

Completely serious.

"The way you end up in a war is that you lose deterrence. One side side gets the idea that, despite the unequal forces or capabilities, that the other side does not have the will to fight."

I always believed that was how Ronald Reagen saw the Soviet Union.. He knew that no one of sound mind would want to fight to live under such a terrible government.. Seems he was right.. With all of DC screaming "He's going to get us all killed" he gave The Soviet's the slightest push and down they came...
When I look at the young folks (Millennials) in our nation today, well, it really doesn't inspire much in the way of confidence for our future...

Seems to me I remember reading that China had some difficulty with missile guidance systems. This was back in the early 90s.

I wonder what, beginning with the initials WJBC, may have happened to change that? Hmmmmm????
