A jury found a grocery clerk guilty of killing a 17-year-old boy who ran out of the store with a beer he didn't pay for in Memphis, Tennessee, in a case that had sparked protests, authorities said.
Anwar Ghazali was convicted of second-degree murder after a four-day trial, Shelby County District Attorney General Amy Weirich said Friday.
"This defendant took it upon himself to be the judge and jury and the executioner over a $2 beer," prosecutor Lora Fowler said, according to CNN affiliate WMC.
The shooting happened in March 2018, after Dorian Harris walked out of the Top Stop Shop with a beer without paying, Weirich said.
Security video of the incident played in court shows that Ghazali, while behind the counter dealing with another customer, pulled out a handgun and pointed it at Harris. He then ran outside to follow the teen and fired several times.
Afterward, he returned to the store and told a witness, "I think I shot him." He did not call the police, and neither did any other customer inside the store, WMC reported.
Harris was shot at least three times and was left to bleed out, Fowler said. His body was found two days later in a yard near the store with gunshots in the back of his thigh, Weirich said.
Ghazali's defense attorney, Blake Ballin, told CNN in an email that Ghazali maintains he acted recklessly that night but his intention was never to harm Harris.
He said they were pleased that the jury rejected the prosecution's argument that this was a calculated and premeditated murder motivated by the theft of a beer. That would have come with a potential life sentence.
Ghazali is expected to be sentenced on September 23.

It doesn’t sound like the clerk was confident in his marksmanship. That is what’s sad, from a human perspective.

I hope the thief had time to make peace with his maker and made use of the opportunity. And if not, at least was able to enjoy the beer before bleeding out.

That is just sad.
One reason might be that your son does not carry your name. Was he born out of wedlock? Did you live in the same house as him and teach him to be an honorable man?
Another might be that you never taught your son that it is not right to steal another man’s property.
Certainly, it was not right for this store clerk to shoot your son in the back. But your son did provoke the encounter and does have some responsibility for his own death.
I find it interesting the race of the perp is so pertinent it is listed in the headline. if this kid had been rioting in a mall or something the headline would have simply said, “teen.”
Second degree murder in Tennessee is a Class A felony punishable by 15-60 years in prison and a fine not more than $50,000.
I hope the jerk gets the full 60. I didn't see any mention of depraved indifference, but they should use that to enhance his prison time. What a jerk!!

I believe we all have, and can exercise, freedom of choice.
You can equate theft of another person's goods with murder of that owner, in that the person with the goods spent part of his life acquiring the goods and that time was taken away from him by the thief. If you take all of the owner's time, it is called murder. So what is part of his life worth?
You can go to law school so you can determine this, and the equivalent fair and just punishments. Or you can just say murder is murder. Is oral sex not sex, therefor you don't break your marriage vows is you engage in this behavior, by your choice? Or is it adultery, pure and simple.
I believe the law is way too complicated, by design. But the common man can figure it out without calling the police or an attorney. Someone took part of another American's life; part or all, he must pay. He took the choice.
Who lost in the retribution? Not me. Not you. Not society. The parents lost a child, so they lost. It is not my concern, I have my own family to worry about and raise properly.
So I ask you, honestly, who cares that a person was punished for his misdeed outside out judicial system? Are you hurt? No.Did anyone benefit? Yes, as a matter of fact, the next guy considering theft might think twice about it, and we will have a more civil society. Equivocate if you like about shades of gray, or accept that there is black and white. I'm with the shooter on this.
