A black teen ran out with a $2 beer. Then a Tennessee store clerk followed him and shot him dead

A jury found a grocery clerk guilty of killing a 17-year-old boy who ran out of the store with a beer he didn't pay for in Memphis, Tennessee, in a case that had sparked protests, authorities said.

Anwar Ghazali was convicted of second-degree murder after a four-day trial, Shelby County District Attorney General Amy Weirich said Friday.

"This defendant took it upon himself to be the judge and jury and the executioner over a $2 beer," prosecutor Lora Fowler said, according to CNN affiliate WMC.

The shooting happened in March 2018, after Dorian Harris walked out of the Top Stop Shop with a beer without paying, Weirich said.

Security video of the incident played in court shows that Ghazali, while behind the counter dealing with another customer, pulled out a handgun and pointed it at Harris. He then ran outside to follow the teen and fired several times.

Afterward, he returned to the store and told a witness, "I think I shot him." He did not call the police, and neither did any other customer inside the store, WMC reported.

Harris was shot at least three times and was left to bleed out, Fowler said. His body was found two days later in a yard near the store with gunshots in the back of his thigh, Weirich said.

Ghazali's defense attorney, Blake Ballin, told CNN in an email that Ghazali maintains he acted recklessly that night but his intention was never to harm Harris.

He said they were pleased that the jury rejected the prosecution's argument that this was a calculated and premeditated murder motivated by the theft of a beer. That would have come with a potential life sentence.

Ghazali is expected to be sentenced on September 23.

It’s all about the beer.

Yes.But I was trying to conjure the parallels between the storeowner in this case playing the part of the cop, as being a kind of wish-fulfillment of how the Michael Brown case was portrayed by his defenders, who spun a false narrative around the real facts of the case, as were soon revealed.

Am I the only one wondering why it took 2 days to find the kid’s body? If it was my kid, I’d sure as heck be wondering why he wasn’t home when it got late enough and I’d start making calls frantically.

I’ve been wondering about the same thing.

I can’t find more info. Did his family report him missing?

If so, maybe no one could find him until two days later. Sad.

When one makes the decision to steal other peoples property he automatically accepts the results of that decision....there is no guaranty that the punishment will fit the crime!!!

Constitutional carry implies being able to carry a gun without any training. I disagree with constitutional carry to the extent that the person is ignorant of the nuances of the law. When there no longer is a threat, the game is over. A perp running away from you is not a threat.

If that be the law in your jurisdiction, it is well that you know it. I simply pointed out that law in other jurisdictions may be different, so making blanket statements like “when they’re no longer a threat the game is over” is not universally true.

I worked in retailing and believe me, customers shoplifting was bad, but when (I was coming into work at 3 pm that day) you see someone walking calmly out the door with a $500 computer (an IBM desktop) and you held the door open, you feel like a fool. I told the shoplifter to enjoy it.

Of course, when your receiving manager was sending 25% of computers out the back door, you have a big problem. That is why OfficeMax is just a shadow of itself.

My kids knows that if they are away from the house, they either need to call us or be home at the agreed time. But, Mrs Deplorable and I aren’t typical parents.

Yeah, sadly we may now be the exception rather than the norm.
My kids all had reasonable curfews and this was before cell-phones. If they were going to be late for some reason, they knew they’d better find a phone!

I believe our Virginia cousins, Jefferson and Washington, went up against these guys.

According to 'The Diplomatic Correspondence of the United States of America, Volume 2', they wrote:

(the aggression) was founded on the laws of their Prophet; that it was written in their Koran, that all nationals who should not have acknowledged their authority, were sinners; that it was their right and duty to make war upon them wherever they could be found, and to make slaves of all they could take as prisoners; and that every Mussulman who was slain in battle was sure to go to Paradise.” Page 342

https://books.google.ca/books?id=CnMUAAAAYAAJ&printsec=frontcover&source=gbs_ge_summary_r&cad=0#v=onepage&q&f=false

Of course, this particular guy could have been just a hothead who didn't think very deeply about anything or according to any philosophy; but one has to wonder where the 'consciousness' was invested.

We have plenty of gun owners here who insist upon their right to keep and carry arms and to protect themselves against aggression. I doubt that any of them would shoot a fleeing kid over a 2-buck beer.

Shot him in the back of his thigh. I guess he could not walk and bled out?
