Newt Gingrich: US must stand with people of Hong Kong fighting for freedom
Fox News ^ | August 17, 2019 | Newt Gingrich

Over the past two months, the world has seen the people of Hong Kong bravely stand up to the growing threat of totalitarianism.

What began as a protest against a bill that would allow prisoners to be extradited to mainland China has evolved into a movement to demand that the Hong Kong government (largely now controlled by China’s Communist Party) adhere to the promises of freedom and autonomy it made when Hong Kong was returned to China in 1997.

Protesters have flooded the streets since June – despite the threat of being arrested, smothered with tear gas, pelted with rubber bullets or attacked by masked thugs with batons.

While Chinese tanks have lined up along the border of Hong Kong and mainland China, protesters have waved the American flag and sung the American national anthem. The protesters show no signs of wavering and the outcome remains in doubt.

But one thing is certain: The United States and the free world are watching.

Chinese leaders must know there will be consequences if the freedoms promised to the people of Hong Kong are eradicated by a Communist dictatorship. This is more than a protest about a proposed new law. It is about protecting the people of Hong Kong from tyranny and despotism – and keeping a growing totalitarian power at bay.

Importantly, this effort by the Chinese Communist Party to meddle in Hong Kong’s affairs is just one part of the regime’s plans to expand its power. As I discuss in my upcoming book, "Trump vs. China," the Chinese Communist Party is taking actions across the globe that are threatening American interests, security and values.

To successfully counter this threat, a unified American response is critical. I am glad to see our leaders are currently in agreement.

If the Hong Kong protesters had a second amendment we would not be having this discussion.

That's a joke, right?

The Japanese ARMY on Guadalcanal, Peleliu, Iwo Jima and Okinawa had plenty of guns, right? In the last three, they were wiped out to nearly the last man, right?

If the Hong Kong protesters had guns, it would simply insure their deaths, as well as the deaths of thousands of innocents.

There he is again, just when we don’t need him.

Hey Newt, what would we do if the Left closed down all departures at LAX?

We’d send in whatever it took, to put an end to it.

I don’t like China’s government, and I do like the freedom fighters, but there’s some things you can’t do anywhere and expect to get away with it.

If we stopped radicals here from stopping all departures, how would we like China popping off about it?

“like George Herbert Walker Bush backed up the protesters at Tiananmen”

Tell me about it. Bush offered to turn over Chinese students here in America to the ChiComms. We set up safehouses for those students in anticipation of that. That single threat by Bush told us all we needed to know about Bush.

Newt is sometimes an interesting read. I was wowed when I heard him speak in 1984. Problem is he failed to measure up when needed. He shirked his duty as a leader and was at times on the edge of the deep swamp.

If Hong Kong needs arms—send them some. If other nations insist on doing more let them have at it. I personally would like to see the Hong Kongers or whatever (??) Kongonians stand up for their own future. If they want a future as free men—then make a stand.

Cheerless, loud people. Very unlike other tourists.

You are so correct! Very strange, rude, pushy people, and not just in the U.S.
The wife and I were in Africa a couple of years ago and they were everywhere.

Hong Kong being set free would be a coup for FReedom...interesting mixture of reactions to this story - anywhere from “support” to “Which way is Canada because I won’t stay in a place that might someday use its military for anything...” even though nobody is talking about an active war.
China will become more vociferous and Hong Kong will try harder for FReedom all because President Trump is going to war with trade demands...
