In Iraqi holy city, row over female violinist at soccer match shows social rift

KERBALA, Iraq: The match should have been cause for young Iraqis to celebrate. Their national team beat Lebanon 1-0 in the first competitive international hosted by Iraq for years in the holy city of Kerbala, complete with an opening ceremony of music and dance.

Instead, the event drew high-level criticism which many of the city's youth say shows the gulf between them and the political and religious establishment. Advertisement

At the opening ceremony last week for the West Asia Football Federation Championship, a tournament of Arab countries hosted by Iraq, a Lebanese woman violinist not wearing the Islamic headscarf and with uncovered arms played Iraq's national anthem.

Many Iraqis were elated that such a ceremony, typical of international football tournaments, could finally take place on their soil after football governing body FIFA last year partially lifted a ban largely in place since 1990 on Iraq hosting competitive matches over security concerns.

Iraq's Shi'ite Muslim endowment which administers religious sites and property, backed by prominent conservative politicians, rushed to condemn the performance saying it "overstepped religious boundaries and moral standards ... and violated the holy sanctity of Kerbala."

OK, so maybe Iraqi kids Are sane.

And Iranian kids.

How to take advantage of that is the question.

Without getting them slaughtered.

It’s not the 20th century anymore.

It’s easy for muslim kids to see everyone else having fun online. It’s not some distant idea or way of life...the western way. It’s brought to them every day now.

Technology is not a friend of authoritarian regimes sometimes.

“... holy city of Kerbala”

You notice that pretty much every Iranian city mentioned by the commie media is somehow or other “holy.”

Nothing here about Islamites bombing our holy city of Boston or shooting up our holy city of San Bernardino.

Can’t wait to see what happens when the first “transgender” malefemale plays in iraq.

The left puts muslims pretty high on the grievance totem. Islam would have to be widely ridiculed for there to be any effect.

I thought the same thing. How the more “holy” a Muslim city is, the more oppressive it is.

I thought “holy” cities are necessarily evil.

Then I thought about our “holy” cities ... Santa Fe, San Francisco, San Diego, Sacramento, San Antonio. There’s nothing particularly “holy” about these cities any more, but it is interesting that they were given “holy” names and were thereby seemingly dedicated to God.

This is what happens when you have soccer matches. We need common-sense soccer control.

Islam desperately needs a Reformation and Muslim brave enough to nail his 95 theses to the mosque door.

Thanks for replying to my post FRiend Theo.

You read about the days of Spanish colonization, and it’s remarkable to come across a settlement that wasn’t given a religious name.

The Spaniards were also big on naming their sailing ships after saints or the Blessed Virgin Mary.

Back when I was in grad school, my wargaming club indulged in a lighthearted “Pirates of the Caribbean” game, where the main target for plunder was the mighty treasure galleon “Nuestra Senora de los Mucho Pesos.”

I don’t think it’s possible to have an Islamic Reformation. The Catholic Reformation was about the behavior of the church, not the words of the Christ. The problem with Islam is what the prophet said. If you can nullify the prophet, there is no religion left.

THAT’S what has to happen to Islam. It has to be decried as evil & eliminated from the face of the earth.
