US moves to block release of Iranian tanker detained in Gibraltar

The US Department of Justice has made a last-minute application to block the release of the Iranian oil tanker Grace 1, which was seized by authorities in Gibraltar last month, a spokesman for the Gibraltar attorney general told CNN.

Gibraltar attorney general Joseph Triay revealed the application had been made at a short hearing at the Supreme Court on Thursday morning.

A decision by the court on whether the tanker could be released was expected on Thursday morning, but has now been delayed until later in the day because of the US request, the spokesman added.

The Gibraltar Chronicle reported that a judge in the hearing said the ship would have been freed were it not for the US intervention.

"The US Department of Justice has applied to seize the Grace 1 on a number of allegations which are now being considered. The matter will return to the Supreme Court of Gibraltar at 4:00 p.m. today," the Gibraltar government said in a statement.

It was not immediately clear what the US Department of Justice allegations were.

I didn’t read details about this incident when it happened.
What egregious act did it commit against us? Or, are we still doing the work for Europe?
I thought we were strictly intel and not getting our feet wet in this one.

Lest there be any confusion:

Gibraltar attorney general Joseph Triay revealed the application had been made at a short hearing at the Gibraltar Supreme Court on Thursday morning.

Way to go CNN!

What egregious act did it commit against us?

They shot down one of our drones.

Seems like a fair trade one tanker for one drone.

Here’s the story in a nutshell ... The U.S. government is filled with people who think the U.S. should be engaging in military action against Iran ... by enforcing sanctions against Iran ... that were imposed by European Union that we don’t belong to ... and enforce an international “open seas” treaty that the U.S. Senate has never ratified (and is therefore not even enforceable under U.S. law) ... to protect shipping between countries other than the U.S. ... conducted by shipping companies outside the U.S. ... that use vessels registered outside the U.S. so they can circumvent U.S. taxes and regulations.

I think I covered it all here.

Quite correct but you forgot to mention that Iran has captured a British tanker in retaliation and did it in the vicinity of the Royal Navy destroyer which failed to respond. Yet the Limeys started to cry for US intervention on their part just immediately.

Considering the EU is the bunch that came up with INSTEX, this whole thing stinks to high heaven.

You seem to have forgotten the primary problem between Iran and the USA. Iran oil sales is under American sanctions. A tanker bound for syria violates the sanctions.

The oil can be detained and sold with the proceeds going into an escrow account and the tanker released minus the oil

The delivery was supposed between Iran and Syria both under US sanctions. Another point is Syria’s own sources of oil are under control of the terrorist groups. Syria needs oil and it can’t get any from any country which maintains any trade with US. Humanitarian aspect aside the legality of sanctions on trade between two countries, both aren’t under US jurisdiction is questionable to say the least. It is more like a blockade and US is not in a state of war with Syria to deny it vital commodities.

The USA is not blockading Syria.

The tanker was obtained from Gibralter, not on the high seas.

I did not foget that.. I am remembering instead that we have one view of Iran, while Europe depends on them and we foot the bill for their pipelines and God only knows what other iran Euro deals we are financing.
I thought we were intel only.. we must stay out and increase sanctions, they are clearly working
