New York Times: Lawns Are Symbols of Racism and Bad for Global Warming
Breitbart ^ | 13 Aug 2019 | Penny Starr

Posted on 08/13/2019 6:50:28 PM PDT by E. Pluribus Unum

While most Americans are spending time this summer enjoying the sun in the comfort of their houses’ yards, the New York Times is out with a new exposé on how lawn care is problematic, once viewed through the lens of social justice. Lawns are contributing to pollution and climate change, asserts narrator David Botti, and their origins are far from woke, in a seven-minute video on the history of American lawns.

Botti says lawns are part of the “colonizing of America,” which transformed the landscape from “pristine wilderness” to “identical rows of manicured nature.”

“These lawns come on the backs of slaves,” he continues, zooming in on a painting of George Washington in a field to highlight men cutting the grass with scythes. “It’s grueling, endless work.”

“By the 1870s we also see American culture slowly start to embrace lawns for the privileged masses,” he states.

The video explains that the perfect lawn is associated with being a model citizen, how the first sprinkler was invented in 1871, and about the advent of “so-called trade cards” that “advertised the hell out of lawn and garden products.”

The Times also refers to the work of historian Ted Steinberg, who calls lawns the “outdoor expression of ’50s conformism.”

To drive home the point, he inserts vintage footage of two women being interviewed in their yards talking about how they moved to their communities to live exclusively near other white people. Neither of them says anything about desiring, having, or maintaining a lawn.

My husband agrees. He wants done with all lawn mowing. I won’t show him this.

We have a large property. Thankfully, a neighbor has a medium sized real tractor and loves to run it with cutters and blades. He keeps our trails clear, plows us out in the winter and grades our gravel drive after the rains in return for hunting privileges.

We’re all white and we cannot afford, mowing, plowing and grading services.

Oh and speaking of scythes? Years ago (1990s or so), we were briefly in a CRP program. 2 college kids came out and told us NOT to mow. They suggested we hire teenagers to hand scythe the weeds on 80 acres. I laughed. There were no teenagers, certainly none who would do such work and if one of them would do it and cut themselves, we’d be sued.

I had to get my Congresscritter to intervene.

The ground cover of choice in the late 19th century was... clover.

If anyone was to come over and mow my crabgrass they are more than welcome. Crabgrass is naturally occurring and I cut it with a human powered (manual) reel mower. No fertilizers (petrochemicals) are ever used. It is 3/4 of an acre. In the fall I mulch the leaves in place with a battery powered Ryobi.

As far as I’m concerned the author of this hit piece can FOAD!

They always link their global warming agenda to some anti racist cause, meaning they hyphen this because they want the minorities to kill themselves for it and feel good about it. It is a way to make sure any slave reparation is diverted back to Al Gore’s pockets

Lawns absorb CO2 and release Oxygen. Looks like the NYT writer doesn’t know basic science, which shouldn’t surprise anyone.

The NYTimes long ago gave up the concept of accurate reporting and writing.
