Rand Paul signals support for Red Flags
Yahoo news ^ | 8/13/2019 | AP

Paul, a strong gun-rights advocate, signaled his willingness to support something along the lines of "red flag" laws that allow guns to be removed from those who may be a danger to themselves and others.

"I'm not opposed to sort of an emergency order for 48 hours and then you get a hearing in a court where you get the full due-process protections," he said in the interview. "It's the one thing that could fix a lot of stuff. I think most of these homicidal attackers ... are sending off signals to their family and community."

Hypocrite!!!!

He pretends to be this great defender of the Constitution and the BoR - and then comes out with a statement like this.

You KNOW, that if him and people like him, signal a willingness to “compromise” that it is a BOHICA situation for We The People and our rights. The Dems/Leftists view of “compromise” is that they get less than they dream of getting - it is NOT, under ANY circumstances, a situation in which they actually give up something (such as, we allow a very limited Red Flag statute like Paul is talking about, and in return Title 18, Section 922(o) is repealed, thus re-opening the NFA registry for full autos). Propose THAT or nationwide shall-issue carry, and then we can think about it.

As for the “universal background check” - that is an absolute non-starter. It would, by necessity, REQUIRE the full registration of every single firearm and tying each to a specific owner. IOW, the registration that would inevitably precede a confiscation order 10-20 years down the road. No f’ing way!!!!

These Red Flag laws are the worst kind of legal tyranny. How can you prove you are innocent of a pre-crime or thought crime? The whole point of the law is to take away someone’s rights BEFORE they commit a crime.

If passed, these laws will become a routine part of divorce proceedings.

I can foresee a well funded campaign to scour the internet looking for posts or videos which the most “progressive” anti-gun judge might find alarming, and use those to target pro 2A people and organizations.

Moreover, if passed this bill guarantees that innocent people will die. When SWAT teams kick down the doors of armed people there will be mistakes made. Innocent people and some cops are sure to pay with their lives.

Yeah. I agree. The fact that it would almost certainly have to be subjective kinda kills the whole idea.

Frankly, I don’t think mass shootings are the problem. It’s all the individual ones that are killing a LOT of people. In a world with 7 billion people, only a very, VERY tiny fraction are killed in this sort of event. I’d worry much more about a car accident or an acquaintance killing me than a mass shooting.

We live in a lost and fallen world.

This is the GOP’s suicide pact.

Sign onto gun control and lose.

Other than that, I’m worried. Deeply worried.

I’m not worried. I feel fairly confident that Trump is the last president this nation will ever have that will finish a term.

I’m just pragmatic.

And I don’t really support red flag. I am just not as against it as much as some here are. It is not my particular hill to die on.

Actually, none of the Red Flag laws enumerate specific crimes for which firearms can be seized. None.

A’m not speaking to any of the specific laws. I’m speaking to the general concept. All the specific laws I’ve seen are ludicrous in the ease they give people and authorities to infringe on someone’s rights without any real cause.

"I'm not opposed to sort of an emergency order for 48 hours and then you get a hearing in a court where you get the full due-process protections," he said

But that would never happen.

I suspect Rand Paul knows this and is setting up his future objections to whatever is proposed. He is somewhat famous for rejecting anything that falls short of his standards.

"And he would have gotten his gun(s) back in 48 hours."

Are you really that naive or do you just play the fool on the internet?

Notice that no Red Flag law was required to arrest the subject of the post below. Also note, "arrest" means they didn't just take guns away and leave her to her own devices.

Those that think such laws will be used for people like this are sorely mistaken.

They will SWAT people for their guns.

Sure, and lots of them will die for their folly.

I had a psycho cheating ex wife slap me with a totally unfounded Red Flag law in California in 2005. She was the violent nutjob, not me. I got a lawyer and did get it back. However lawyers are not cheap. ended up with a $3000 Ruger 9mm brick

One of the strengths of this concept is that it is not a blanket law. It only affects individuals that allegedly cross a line.

And who determines where that "alleged" line is?

something like 89% of the country wants the Red Flag Laws

I don't believe that for one second.
