(CNN)One of the largest teacher's unions in the United States is calling on Walmart to stop selling guns.
The American Federation of Teachers also demanded that the company stop donating to politicians who take money from the National Rifle Association and threatened a boycott if the retailer didn't take action.
"If Walmart continues to provide funding to lawmakers who are standing in the way of gun reform, teachers and students should reconsider doing their back-to-school shopping at your stores," the union's president, Randi Weingarten, said in a letter addressed to Walmart CEO Doug McMillon.
The union also called on the company to fund gun buyback programs and to lead a national discussion with corporate leaders on making the country safer. "Walmart has millions of customers, and they should all feel safe while shopping," the letter reads. "If you choose to act, it could change our national conversation in an instant."
The American Federation of Teachers represents 1.7 million members, according to its website. Walmart did not immediately return CNN's request for comment. The company stopped selling assault rifles after the Sandy Hook shooting in 2015, and raised its minimum gun purchasing age to 21 after last year's school shooting in Parkland, Florida. It also does not sell handguns outside of Alaska.
But as the nation's largest retailer, Walmart is still one of the largest sellers of guns and ammunition in the country. Now after a series of recent deadly shootings, the company is facing increased pressure to stop selling guns.
Walmart stores were the site of two shootings in recent weeks. A white nationalist is accused of killing 22 people inside a Walmart store in El Paso, Texas, on Saturday.

Walmart will cave. They’ve been assimilated. They got in bed with the Clintons back in the 90’s.
Walmart has not sold handguns in decades, and does not sell rifles in a military dress.
They do sell hunting rifles and shotguns, but not in some states like California or New Mexico.
Walmart should make them a deal. We’ll stop selling guns if you idiots will stop “teaching” and brainwashing our children.
Abolish government schools.
Do away with the DOE. Institute nationwide school vouchers. Problem solved.
If Wal-Mart decides to stop selling guns and ammo it will have nothing to do with these clowns. The teachers union and other unions have already been telling people not to shop at Wal-Mart for 40 years or more, and it didn’t prevent their growth at all.

Because sooner or later, a new set of scumbags will worm their way into office. The IDEA of government schools is wrong; the education of children belongs to their parents and to the civil society, not to the government.

Personally that would be fine with me. I would rather my friendly local gunstore get all that new Wal-Mart business anyway. I know about where he stands on the 2nd amendment, unlike Wal-Mart.
They’re still the nation’s largest retailer of guns, aren’t they? If they quit, it could be a boon to the local gun shops that I see struggling. ButI I think it’ll be a bottom-line decision on WM’s part.
I know you’re being sarcastic, but you can not bargain with the left. First they have nothing to offer - they demand all of our guns and we make a deal that they only take some of them. What have we gained? Second if you accept their phony “deal” the ink won’t be dry before they break it and move to the next restriction.
You cannot reason with them. You cannot bargain with them. They will never be content until our society makes the former DDR look like a libertarian paradise. Where every word is censored, where you are only allowed to keep whatever fraction of your earning they deem you need to continue to work to support their childish social fantasies, where the only firearms are in the hands of the milice/police/FBI/etc. where you are forced to live in urban centers (think soviet style apartment blocks), where your only transportation options are public transport with private cars and air travel restricted to government apparatchiks. Anyway you get the picture.
They must be destroyed or they will destroy this country and us with it.
Stick to teaching. This is why you need to focus on local races where you live. You say to yourself it’s just a school board election, but it’s local politics that affects all of us the most in our everyday lives, and this is where the left concentrates most of their electoral efforts. Next year during the primaries in the winter and spring and in the general election in November take particular notice how much money is being spent in school board and county supervisor seats. If you control the local political apparatus you then can then be in position to control the county, regional and eventually the state government. Local races matter and the RATs know it, and that’s why they’ll spend hundreds of thousands, sometimes millions for what we all think are meaningless local offices!
