“We should have Apache’s helos and A10s in the air and take out these thugs.”

Or, we could have just sent over a few Apaches (as in Apache Indians) to deal with the matter. The Apaches were very creative with how they dealt with captured Mexicans.

My uncle came out of the Marines in WWII and became a Texas Ranger. He used to relate how shots were exchanged over the Rio Grande all the time. He said the Rangers were just trying to get close to deter the ‘bandits/

This has been a dangerous border for decades. As late as 1917 at attempt was made to organize Texas residents and Mexicans into a revolutionary attempt to retake the famous Nuesces Strip in Texas, an underpopulated area between the Rio Grande and the Nueces River that was home to all sorts of bandits, rustlers, and bad men from both countries.
