If you look back on the Golden Age of Hollywood, "Stars" didn't comment on much of anything. Oh, they'd campaign for War Bonds during WW2, but for the most part, they kept their mouths shut. The studios concocted fake biographies for them, made up fake quotes for them, and sent them on fake dates with each other (sometimes to hide the fact that one of them was gay).
Now that the studio system is dead and the muzzles are off, we see why the studios did that. Actors are for the most part inherently stupid. Better to script their comments rather than let them speak what is on their (what passes for) minds. I miss those days.
