The mass murder in Dayton Ohio appears to have started with the killing of the perpetrator's sister and the wounding of her boyfriend. Several rampage murders have started with the killing of relatives. Ideologically motivated rampage murders seldom do. Images of the firearm used have been released by the Dayton Police Department.
The firearm appears to be a pistol customized from an Anderson AM-15 lower receiver and other parts, including a blade arm brace. The AM-15 is not a typo. The AM stands for Anderson Manufacturing. The AM-15 was ordered from Texas, online, and delivered to a local Ohio federal firearms dealer. It is unknown where the other parts were added to the receiver. They could have been added in Texas, or they could have been added by the murderer. A receiver can be made into different types of firearms, depending on what parts are added.
The AR in AR-15 stands for ArmaLite Rifle, or for the first two letters of ARmaLite. The system was invented by Eugene Stoner in 1955. Over the last 64 years, Americans have come to realize the advantages of the AR system. After the patents ran out in 1977, numerous companies made parts for AR-pattern firearms. Most of the parts are interchangeable. As noted on the AM-15 lower receiver, different calibers can be used with the system, with appropriate changes of the upper receiver, bolt head, and magazines.
The legal definition of a pistol in the United States includes AR-15 type pistols.

Failing that, it needs to be reformed. There is no need to regulate suppressors, short barreled shotguns, or short barreled rifles any more than rifles, pistols, or shotguns.
The only reason why short barreled rifles and short barreled shotguns were “taxed” by the NFA was because originally handguns were also to be “taxed” at the same rate of $200. But at the last minute handguns were removed from the bill, but SBSs and SBRs remained.
What kind of shoes did the shooter wear? Shouldn’t those be outlawed as well? What kind of music did he like? Outlaw that too.
It’s not the gun it’s the shooter. He had it shipped “to a local Ohio federal firearms dealer”. Presumably, he was run through their State Police background system and purchased the gun legally. Why was this nut job cleared? No priors?
Any “reform” of the National Firearms Act needs to address the mental health of the buyer but, even that will not guarantee 100% safety.
Cars are used in crimes and there are still more vehicular deaths than gun deaths. California and Florida lead the nation. No one wants to ban cars.
I think we need to address gun crimes as we would DUI’s. Stiff punishment must be the top priority to deter misuse.
You are pretty much correct. It was the NRA that stripped pistols from the bill, and stopped the national registration scheme.
This ebook is the entirety of the National Firearms Act and Hearings, in a digitized 166 pages, from the House of Representatives Ways and Means Committee, starting on Monday, 16 April, 1934. It is available from Google at no charge as an ebook.
The Hearings of the National Firearms Act of 1934 provide an immensely valuable resource in understanding the intentions of the law. It provides a good look at how the intricacies and provisions of the first really significant Federal Firearms law concerning individuals, came to be.
The book is the official record of the hearings in the House Ways and Means Committee and of testimony given in two periods. First April 16 and 18, 1934, then from May 14 to May 16, 1934.
The most important thing to be noted is that the law was first concerned with the effective registration and regulation of civilian ownership of pistols and revolvers. Machine guns, sawed off shotguns, and gun mufflers/silencers were of relatively less concern, in that order.
There was near unanimous belief that machine guns could be taxed so as to make them virtually unavailable to the common man. That was already the case because of the price. At the time, the only available sub machine gun was the Thompson. The retail price was $200, and they were not selling strongly. There was only slight mention of other machine guns.
There was somewhat less agreement on sawed off shotguns. Sawed off rifles were added almost as an afterthought.
The hearings never touched on gun mufflers/silencers at all; no reason was given for their regulation. Machine guns were a concern, but they were few in number. The proponents mentioned they were being manufactured illegally by bootleggers.
It is clearly stated in the hearings, that making the law a "tax" was to avoid the potential violation of the Second Amendment. The Second Amendment had not yet been tested in the Supreme Court. The consensus was that States were not restricted by the Second Amendment.
The hearings give an excellent view of the maneuvering of the NRA. Caught somewhat off guard, they rallied and had significant impact. The reality is considerably different from various rumors you may have heard over the last several decades.
It was the lobbying of gun owners around the nation, lead by the NRA, that killed the inclusion of pistols and revolvers in the bill. Registration of pistols and revolvers, at no fee, was offered. That option was also killed. The proponents could not give an adequate answer as to why registration was needed.
If a student of gun legislation wishes to understand the history and the antecedents of current legislation, here is an excellent place to start. Nearly all the same arguments used today were presented in 1934.
For example, semi-automatics that could hold 12 or more rounds were initially defined as machine guns. Changing that definition to the current one, where the requirement is that more than one shot results per pull of the trigger, was one of the first NRA successes.
The ignorance of the people proposing the legislation is obvious. It is eerily reminiscent of the ignorance seen in the current debate. Most arguments were based on anecdotal evidence.
Today, there is the advantage of much more data and analysis. The arguments are essentially the same.
I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in firearms and legislation. It gives important insights into the current debate.

Gun Watch
who was the boyfriend? any pics?
I heard that the shooter was seen drinking a Diet Pepsi earlier in the day as he snacked on a bag of Lay’s bbq chips.
He was wearing Hane’s underwear and Fruit of the Loom socks . ..
Boxers btw. .
He is talking to the police, but I have not seen a picture.
My attitude is, if he's too dangerous to own a gun, then he shouldn't be loose on the street. Any adjudication of mental unfitness should require full "due process", with client represented by counsel.
The reason they went with a $200 tax on machine guns is because they knew the NFA was unconstitutional and the government did not have the power to ban machine guns.
I'm sure the Left would be willing to accommodate that desire.
Thanks for finding this & posting!
Bottom line the 2nd amendment specifically protects the citizens right to own machine guns just as our government. Just as the first amendment protects all speech but is specifically aimed at protecting political speech the 2nd amendment protects all firearms such as those for hunting and sport but specifically protects the right to possess weapons that would be used to oppress the citizenry and that is machine guns.
So as it stands today and has been since 1934, the American people do not have the protection of the 2nd amendment as intended by our founders.
MarkT, thank you for posting about the ebook. I will be reading that this weekend.
Yes, we know Ammoland, now why don’t you freakin pipe down about it huh?
...thanks for that info.... wonder how long it will be before
a lawsuit (or several...) will be filed against Anderson
Manufacturing...? you just know that lawyers are even now
working on one..... Judge Andrew Napolitano (with whom I
often do NOT agree...) has a good piece out today regarding
the right to bear arms and how that right is in danger of
being whittled away... well worth the read....
There’s no reliable way to predict which “crazy” people (most people) are going to become homicidal mass murderers (very few people).
specifically?
Was the sister’s boyfriend Black?
As I recall, six of the nine dead were Black, which suggested a lot of Black patrons in that bar.
Killing your own sister? That is so creepy.
Brothers killing brothers I can understand.
Brothers killing sisters, I will guess, is very rare.
Using the logic of leftists to confiscate our guns...
