HONG KONG (AP) - The U.S. government on Thursday stepped up its warnings to travelers to Hong Kong because of increasing violence surrounding pro-democracy protests in the Chinese city.
The State Departments Level 2 travel advisory issued Thursday urges increased caution in Hong Kong due to civil unrest and tells travelers to avoid demonstrations and to exercise caution if unexpectedly in the vicinity of large gatherings or protests.
The protests were sparked two months ago by proposed extradition legislation that could have seen suspects sent to mainland China where they could face torture and unfair politicized trial. They have since morphed into calls for broader democratic reforms in the former British colony, along with the resignation of Chief Executive Carrie Lam and investigations into alleged police abuse of force.
The territorys crucial travel industry has suffered as tourists put off their visits, with Australia, Ireland, Britain, and Japan having also issued travel advisories to their citizens.

Just saying...
Man it’s hard to tone down the desire for freedom.
But you’re right. Getting extradited to China would be a REALLY bad thing for a person’s professional life!
Or any other aspect for that matter!
The only thing that suprises me is that China has waited as long before crushing this protest. I expect the murdered bodies to become tank pulp any day now. We will know it’s started when the Internet goes down in Hong Kong first.
The protests use to be just on Sundays. Then they moved it to Saturday and Sunday. Now it seems like its every day somewhere is a protest going on here.
China is beating the war drums and while they have never ruled out using the Army they never formally said it one way or another. They just continue to say buzz words like “peace” and “unity” and “returning to normal.”
Now there seems to be someone from China every week warning that HK needs to return to normal or bad things may happen.
Not to mention Chicago.
Detroit and Baltimore!!
Why?
Violence is all on the other side.
Protestors aren’t some fringe element, it’s everybody.
Hong Kong got screwed over being “given” to Chinese Communists by spineless English.
They’re making it known they don’t accept communist rule.
I know, I know, I know.
However, I just also saw this:
“China warns it will intervene if situation in Hong Kong deteriorates and local government fails to get a grip on ‘worst crisis since 1997 handover’”
That is 12 hours old now. It sounds like it is high time, for people in Hong Kong to back off for a while.
I’m not kidding.
Like Beijing 30 years ago. China at first welcomed people to speak. But at some point, if you do not back down, they will respond.
Hong Kong is no longer part of England. They need to back off a bit, and show they know how to (sorry, but) behave.
Those slime bags will look the other way. Maybe it will be for financial reasons, but I believe it will be for idealogical reasons too. They are all a bunch of communists anyway, so I am sure they agree with those pinko commie geeks in China.
Sad man sad. You sound like a squish swamp dweller.
The people of Jong Kong have done nothing wrong. At all. And aren’t doing anything wrong.
It’s not hurting anyone or disrupting business. At all.
The extradition bill should be pulled and the Chief Executive should resign.
It’s not hard.
Well we disagree.
I believe the people of Hong Kong, have grown up in a world, which changed twenty years ago.
If they back off now, they can keep their world for thirty more years.
If they keep pushing, I fear they will learn the hard way, that they are no longer in the UK.
Not being a “squish”.
Just saying what I see. You may not agree.
That is fine.
“If they back off now, they can keep their world for thirty more years.”
Yeah. Backing off on standing up for your rights and freedom to placate tyranny always works.
Has no one considered the HK violence is from mainland China instigators the CCP sent to forment the conditions under which the PLA can invade?
They’re called Agent Provocateurs. Communists have been using them for 140 years.
Yeah, maybe the Trump campaign disruptors were really Trump supporters too.
And the Leftist shooters that attack people inside Leftist-created gun free zones whenever the Left is on the ropes are actually “inspired by Trump” as the Left claims.
The gullability to Communist propaganda and manipulation is the greatest indicator of Freedom’s present vulnerability to tyranny.
I wish the protesters in Beijing 30 years ago, would have backed off.
I really do.
The Butchers of Beijing *will* roll tanks down Nathan Road if they deem it necessary...because they know that there's *nobody* to stop them.
You *absolutely* have to admire their courage. What happened then could, somewhere down the road, result in the Butchers of Beijing (and their successors) being driven from office.
“The only thing that surprises me is that China has waited as long before crushing this protest. I expect the murdered bodies to become tank pulp any day now. We will know its started when the Internet goes down in Hong Kong first.”
The Democrats are scared to death about this. If China fires a shot and starts dragging people away, Trump will come out and say this is what will happen when the Democrat Socialists are in control of our government. And with the present protests in the US are showing, this is their goal.
Then he can throw in that it is already happening with left wing social media denying conservatives their 1st amendment rights as well as the left wingers in congress wanting to deny Americans their second amendment rights.
A congressman yesterday said it was the lefts goal to get rid of the second amendment. I contend that it is the lefts goal to amend the constitution to reflect their views and the second and first amendment are just the beginning.
The army is already killing people in Venezuela. The media yawns... Not interested , not in the template.
