A Republican congressman from Illinois is calling for universal background checks and raising the legal age to purchase guns following the weekend's back-to-back mass shootings.
Rep. Adam Kinzinger wrote an op-ed published on Medium advocating for the gun reform legislation Monday, in the wake of two in less than 48 hours in Texas and Ohio that killed a combined total for more than 30 people.
After every shooting, the conversation runs like a broken record with some who believe banning all guns is the answer, while others advocate for arming more and more people to protect against these dangers, Kinzinger wrote. Meanwhile, those of us not in those two mindsets are left feeling helpless, frustrated, and at a loss. We have a gun violence epidemic, and to address it, we need to change some laws and change some hearts.
Kinzinger said universal background checks might create a slight inconvenience to some, but will not restrict the rights of those who are eligible to purchase.
The Democratic-controlled House passed a universal background check bill in February. Kinzinger was not one of the eight Republicans who voted for the bill.
The bill has not been voted on in Senate. Following the weekends mass shootings, many Democrats called on Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) to bring the Senate back in for a special session during the month-long recess to vote on the bill.

It will give them absolute control over who can purchase and possess forearms and the net will get tighter every year that goes by.
Well he’s in Illinois. But McConnell, Graham, President Trump and others who’ve presented themselves as being conservative should avoid approval of any gun control. Otherwise, they’ll lose the 2020 election and pave the way for much greater fight between left and right.
How about locking up known lunatics into state looney bins like it was 50 years ago. It was common practice then. I worked in one in the 1960s. The pictures of mass murderers look just like the people in the criminally insane wards where I worked. We have closed these hospitals down at the request of Marxists to help destroy western culture. They did a good job there.
Weve already got background checks for the most part.
And there is your registration.
Its not the guns.
Yes. It is a plan by the left to lose elections for the republicans and take the means of the populace of protecting themselves against dictatorship.
FU!
WTH people the GOP is collapsing and turning into socialists.
It will give them absolute control over who can purchase and possess forearms and the net will get tighter every year that goes by.
Time to stock up now.
Any word on what gun sales are doing at the moment?
For now we have a breather as Congress is on their August recess. They can't do any more damage for another month yet.
“Universal Background Checks” is code for registration.
Registration leads to confiscation.
Always.
Nothing like a little infringement to cheer you up. Uh, NO.
Ha! I love it!

I wonder if he happened to mention that 25 people were shot in Chicago in the same two days. That wasn’t a mass shooting just a normal weekend in Chicago.

More feel-good knee-jerk governance that avoids addressing the root of the problem.
My, my haven’t the Ill. gun laws, the ‘gun-law- model for the nation, haven’t they done a fine job.....how many murders this week in Chicago alone?
VERY cool picture!

As they say, one man’s inconvenience is another
man’s infringment.
We already have background checks and they have had
no effect on these mass murderers.
One can only speculate on weather a quick and effective
death penalty in the case of multiple murderers might
result in declining numbers of instances.
