GOP lawmaker calls for universal background checks, raising legal age for gun purchases

A Republican congressman from Illinois is calling for universal background checks and raising the legal age to purchase guns following the weekend's back-to-back mass shootings.

Rep. Adam Kinzinger wrote an op-ed published on Medium advocating for the gun reform legislation Monday, in the wake of two in less than 48 hours in Texas and Ohio that killed a combined total for more than 30 people.

“After every shooting, the conversation runs like a broken record with some who believe banning all guns is the answer, while others advocate for arming more and more people to protect against these dangers,” Kinzinger wrote. “Meanwhile, those of us not in those two mindsets are left feeling helpless, frustrated, and at a loss. We have a gun violence epidemic, and to address it, we need to change some laws and change some hearts.”

Kinzinger said universal background checks “might create a slight inconvenience to some, but will not restrict the rights of those who are eligible to purchase.”

The Democratic-controlled House passed a universal background check bill in February. Kinzinger was not one of the eight Republicans who voted for the bill.

The bill has not been voted on in Senate. Following the weekend’s mass shootings, many Democrats called on Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) to bring the Senate back in for a special session during the month-long recess to vote on the bill.

Kinzinger has always seemed like a douche bag to me.

None of these so-called “mass shootings” in recent years were done with privately purchased firearms. NONE.

This idiot Congress critter in ILL-Annoy doesn’t know what he’s talking about.

If the age of the benefits of citizenship are to be raised then the obligations of citizenship (taxes, military service, etc.) must also be raised.

I have a simple test for any knee jerk reactionary bill introduction.

“Would this new proposed legislation have prevented the crime that occurred”

if the answer is no, than someone has an agenda.

if the answer is yes, then you can debate things further.

If you want to raise the age for gun purchases, you need to also raise the age for voting. If a citizen is to young to come to the aid of state / society with their firearm (militia), then they are too young to participate in the governance of the state / society. They both go hand in hand.

Traitors in our midst. Since 18 is adult age for voting, for military, for signing contracts, it should be good enough for firearms. Besides, the bill of rights did not include an age so should apply to everyone.

Yo Turd,

Most mass killers could have passed background checks. Be honest, UBC’s are nothing more than a step to registration, one of the holy grails of the gun grabbers steps toward confiscation.

They never say how these new laws will prevent future shootings, mainly because they don’t care. It’s all about punishing gun owners because they’re gun owners. Period.

Im for background checks too.

The background of every candidate for public office needs to be thoroughly vetted.

If any problems are found then they should be disqualified

Stupid douchecanoe. He’s become the new John McCain. A USAF vet and currently a Lt Col & pilot in the ANG. Been in politics too long — rotting his brain, common sense, and judgment.

Kinzinger is a traitor.

So is any politician supporting gun control.

How about locking up known lunatics into state looney bins like it was 50 years ago.

Who gets to decide who is a lunatic? And which one of these mass murderers would have qualified for such a distinction?

Raise the voting age too, while you’re at it.

Not to make light of the murders in El Paso or Dayton however don't the drug pushers kill their share of people? Drivers do their share of killing....the politicians don't care, they need a center-piece like a GUN to get votes not some sleazy drug dealer or drunk driver, those nits don't get you votes.

"There were 268 drug overdose deaths in the first three months of this year..."

" More than 90 people die in car accidents everyday..."

Universal background checks is de facto registration. The next step is confiscation.
