Graham to offer bipartisan 'red flag' bill with Trump's support
The Hill ^ | 08/05/19 | Jordain Carney

Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) said on Monday that he will introduce bipartisan legislation encouraging states to create "red flag" laws and that President Trump is "very supportive" of the idea.

Graham, in a statement, said he has reached a deal with Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.) on a bill that would start a federal grant program to help and encourage states to create "'red flag' protection order" laws, which are meant to make it easier for law enforcement to identify mentally ill people who should be banned from purchasing guns.

“These grants will be given to law enforcement so they can hire and consult with mental health professionals to better determine which cases need to be acted upon. This grant program also requires robust due process and judicial review. It does allow for quick action," Graham said in the statement.

He added that he spoke with Trump earlier Monday "about this proposal and he seems very supportive."

The forthcoming legislation comes after a gunman on Saturday killed 20 people and wounded dozens more in an attack at a Walmart in El Paso, Texas, on Saturday. Less than a day later, at least nine people were killed and more than two dozen were injured in a Dayton, Ohio shooting. The two shootings are not believed to be linked.

Trump highlighted "red flag" legislation during his speech from the White House on Monday as one of the proposals he would support in the wake of the two shootings. He did not discuss gun background check proposals, which are being pushed for by Democrats in the wake of the shootings.

Graham added in his statement on Monday that he would introduce the bill with Blumenthal in the "very near future," adding that he hopes senators from both parties "will join us to finally move forward in the effort to keep guns out of the hands of dangerous people.”

“I appreciate President Trump’s strong statement rejecting hate and white supremacist ideology, urging us all to reject a culture of violence, as well as a call to action on multiple fronts," Graham added.

“Put your “Red Flag” back in your panties Linthy.”

He has the full support of the President, does he not?

So is Graham right to propose this, or does the President also wear panties? Based on what you wrote it had to be one or the other.

All laws that take away your guns after some alleged bad thought, alleged “domestic abuse” can lead to total gun bans. The “red flag” allegation may be bogus. A disgruntled neighbor, someone where you work or when a romantic partner gets mad at you or even an anonymous tip will take away your guns and it will be a long time and lots of money spent on your lawyer to get the bogus allegation overturned by the court that acted on the tip. Yes, the domestic abuse take away is after you are convicted so you get some due process but the red flag is before you have a chance to defend yourself.

It's a great way to harass that neighbor or co-worker you don't like...

I can see how this can be abused and enrage victims of this harassment who then lash-out.

I’m sure we can let the FISA court handle this after seeing the great job they have done lately in protecting our rights.

they are making mental health the cudgel by which they will beat us into submission and consent to a new law “for the children”

Last year it was Bump Stocks

The previous year it became “Red Flag” laws(mental health)

Next will be weapons of war

Or

Limitations on magazine capacity (one Freepee already suggested that this morning as the foundation of his thread)

Why not have all guns storee at the local P.D. armory. Yep, you can get your property, by appointment only, at their hours and days only.

You must return your property to the armory by a specific date and time, which will be limited and if you are late , you will suffer the wrath of LEO...

“Here are the 20 rounds you allowed to have during this period”...

And so forth

Red flag = Guilty until proven innocent.

Which is why it will be a difficult road. Let's start by identifying threats and getting them help rather than ignoring it.

How many guns does the target have? How do you know?

If the accuser saw three guns six months ago and the target sold one five months ago, how far does the search go to find the one gun that isn’t there anymore?
