Top US Navy SEAL tells commanders in light of misconduct: 'We have a problem'

The top US Navy SEAL recently sent a blistering letter to the force, writing in boldface type, "We have a problem," following several high profile incidents of alleged misbehavior by the US Navy's elite service members, CNN has learned.

Rear Adm. Collin Green has given commanders until August 7 to detail the problems they see and provide recommendations on how they will ensure troops are engaging in ethical and professional behavior.

The letter -- dated July 25 and exclusively obtained by CNN -- comes in the wake of several high profile incidents of alleged misbehavior by SEALs.

"I don't know yet if we have a culture problem, I do know that we have a good order and discipline problem that must be addressed immediately," Green said.

"the letter comes on the heels of an entire SEAL team being sent home from Iraq following allegations of sexual assault and drinking alcohol during their down time -- which is against regulations."

Remember when beer was given to troops, now there is General Order #1.

Wonder if there is a link between the Top Gun trailer coming out and this letter?

My experience with SEALs was mixed: I was a Marine officer and was put off by some of the odd culture I saw when I worked with them. There seemed to be a childish/undisciplined aspect and not a lot of adult leadership in evidence.

I was responsible for their Atlantic Fleet weapons and ammunition support when I was on the SURFLANT staff and their stuff was cruddy and often unserviceable when I looked at it.

To me, a professional keeps their weapons ready for reliable use at all times.

“We served troops in Iraq beer?”

Almost never, unless you were lucky enough to be with the Brits.

But Vietnam had beer, not sure about Granada and Panama.

Nobody does it better than the Aussies. The few times they flew up to Japan, they brought more than enough beer with them. They had more beer than gear in the plane. They weren’t opposed to sharing either.

Yeah, Iraq had some of this ‘1-beer celebration’ BBQs and concerts before, and even after G.O. 1. Commanders discretion I believe. But us Scumbag IT Contractors with our own up-armored trucks always had BIAP Duty Free warehouse and liquor stores in the IZ. A co-worker used a gutted-out old 3U router to get his flat case of vodka thru the check points. The case fit perfectly inside. Cisco engineering. Then he’d store it under his desk at work.

You can only get away with what you control. Once ppl lose control it ruins it for everyone.

“My experience with SEALs was mixed...” I’m with you and I’ll leave it at that. I have a couple of good friends who are former SEALs and they epitomize the “quiet professionals” theme, but I know the guys in a certain Tier 1 Army unit consider SEALs “The Hollywood version of special operations” or some variation on that theme.

The wars and the millenial culture change haven’t been good for them. They are a very different organization than back in the 80s.
Individuals in that bunch have murdered a SF guy for knowing about their dope ring. There have been drug arrests among them. They have an openly homo one. One that turned tranny.

All of that would have been pretty unheard of in the old days.

They do have a problem, but it is the leadership and the overall American culture now.

The old joke about how does a SEAL op order differ from a delta op order?

The SEAL mission order also addresses book and movie rights.

And truly unthinkable, the Marines have a problem too. The Commanding General just wrote a division wide letter about the poor state of discipline. He said he personally saw a Marine in the Exchange in his pajamas. Then he said he approached two Marines on bus stop bench, and they did not stand up and did not salute. When he called them out on it, one said he didn’t because was on the phone!

Incredibly, the General is the one in trouble now.

Actually, they weren’t that good back then either: lost very badly during Grenada and Panama. (Got ambushed by drug dealers in Panama and got nearly wiped out and lost several drowned during Grenada and attacked the wrong house and got surrounded by Cubans and had to rescued)

Panama yes, but the local swill had high levels of formaldehyde, which gives you a massive headache. Or so I’m told...

Yeah we had beer, at times, but we had to buy it. It wasn’t given to us like cigarettes.
