Mario Lopez issued an apology on Wednesday for comments he made during an interview last month in which he called it “dangerous” for parents to allow young children to choose their own gender identity.
The actor told NBC News that his comments were "ignorant and insensitive" and added that he has "a deeper understanding of how hurtful they were.”
“I have been and always will be an ardent supporter of the LGBTQ community, and I am going to use this opportunity to better educate myself," Lopez told NBC. "Moving forward I will be more informed and thoughtful."
The "Extra" co-host had faced growing backlash over comments he made during an appearance on "The Candace Owens Show" in June that recently went viral.
At one point in the interview, Owens pressed Lopez about what she described as a “weird” trend happening in Hollywood in which celebrities are allowing their children to choose their own gender identity.
"Celebrities are coming out — and I know Charlize Theron did this a few weeks ago — and saying that their child is picking their gender," Owens said.
“I’m kind of blown away, too,” Lopez said. “I’m never one to tell anyone how to parent their kids, obviously, and I think if you come from a place of love, you really can’t go wrong, but at the same time, my God, if you're 3 years old and you’re saying you’re feeling a certain way or you think you’re a boy or a girl or whatever the case may be, I just think it's dangerous as a parent to make that determination."
“It's sort of alarming, and my gosh, I just think about the repercussions later on,” he went on to say, later adding: “When you’re a kid ... you don’t know anything about sexuality yet. You’re just a kid."

I’m a bad parent. When my 3 y/o daughter decided she was a puppy, I failed her. Instead of taking her to a therapist to help with the mental transition and to a surgeon to help with the physical trans-species transition, I crushed her dreams. No new-age parenting award for me.

He’s ardent; that should be worth something. There was a time when people were ‘ardent’ about their faith or perhaps their team.

This kid goes to the doctor, seeking help for his brother who thinks he’s a chicken. After finding out this has been going on for a couple of years, the doctor wanted to know why they waited so long to get help. The kid replied that they needed the eggs.
