Vladimir told a great one about how his father, during Soviet times, solved the familys toilet problem.
When the familys toilet bowl cracked, you couldnt just go to the hardware store and buy a replacement. What hardware store? The government installed that toilet, and it was the governments responsibility to replace it. But good luck getting on a list to have your toilet replaced. Finally, Vladimirs father, a senior engineer, cooked up a plan. He had a Communist Party connection in a city called Novokuznetzk, a guy who could get him a new toilet.
Problem: Vladimirs family lived in Dnipro, Ukraine; Novokuznetzk is on the other side of the USSR, near the Mongolian border a 17-hour flight.
But the family needed a toilet. So off dad went.
How did he get the toilet home? He lugged it onto the Aeroflot flight, and sat on the toilet all the way back to Dnipro. Though a small man, Vladimirs dad wrestled the toilet up into their apartment and installed it. There it remains to this day.

Socialism fails every time it is tried.
The guy had a definite old skool American approach to life...
It works very poorly and adds new meaning to when you gotta go, you gotta go. If they lived in Frisco they could have just opened a window and went on the sidewalk. The joys of Capitalism. /s

[Socialism fails every time it is tried.]
Yeah, that darn history and Venezuela, too.
But don’t tell the Democrats. They’ve been telling fools it will work THIS time. Really. Now, they’re gonna need your vote and to raise your taxes, but.........
There is an interesting link (yes a blog pimp but short) in the comments that is worth a read.
Memories of particular odors can be more vividly recalled than perhaps any other type of experience. This article just brought back to me what roadside “rest stations” in the Soviet Union smelled like. They were bad enough to knock you over. Yep, Communism has a distinct aroma, as residents in American locales like San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Baltimore are discovering.
"Poorly" being the operative word there.

Ah for the famous Soviet open air public vomitorium, special of a kind for Vodka society...
Many years ago, before the fall of the USSR, my wife had a decorating magazine that had an article about life in Moscow. One could order a dining table at department store. One style available and you waited weeks.
Want to paint your apartment? If you’re lucky you might get 2 liters from someone at a construction siteenough to paint a wall or two. This was in the capital and largest city in the nation. My small (35,000) has at least a dozen places to buy paint and a half dozen places to buy dining suites.
But once it was installed did it take care of business? At one point US citizens were driving to Canada and smuggling in “big flush” toilets. You know the ones we had prior to socialism in the US? Back in the mean ol’ days of capitalism. When the design features of washing machines, dryers, dishwashers, water heaters, and shower heads where left in the hands of consumers and manufacturers.
I’m trying to figure out how he got even a small flush toilet on the plane...I figure he must have bought an extra ticket.
Did he disguise it as a passenger?
He told the airline it was his Therapy toilet......
I fell ill in Poland post-Communism. Visited a “state hospital”. Walked in and surly doc was sterilizing instruments on an open flame. Probably not an autoclave in that entire hospital.
Great.
Now the airlines will take the bathrooms out of the planes and install twelve toilets.
Theyll call them Relief Seats and charge an extra hundred bucks for them.
“Vladimirs family lived in Dnipro, Ukraine....”
The city was renamed Dnipro in 2016. Good - best to not honor murderous Communist thugs.
I heard a bunch of stories from distant family about life under the Communists...and the stupidity and sheer evil of the system match what this story and others circulating in the West have stated. It was Hell on Earth, including Stalin’s goons beating my old, cancer-ridden, great grandfather to death...which is why I’d like to clock anyone who says anything kind about Communism.
Story from a Russian Musician from last week:
In the Mid-70’s, there was no such thing as an electric guitar in the Soviet Union, they simply did not exist.
This young man came across a copy of a Mechanics Illustrated Junior in German, that told how to make your own. So he built one from wood and spare wires. The problem was the pickup. The article said the best pickup was a headset mic from a broken telephone, phones were an obiquitous thing in the west, every house had one.
But in Soviet Russia, only important people had house phones. He went to every public phone in his large southern Russian city, all of the mic pickups had already been taken. Every single one of them...
