The dramatic collapse in US-China talks in May suggested that Chinese negotiators did not have full political backing for the concessions they proposed to reach a deal to end the trade war, according to a veteran US trade official ahead of the resumption of face-to-face negotiations this week in Shanghai.
China was reported to have made last minute, large-scale edits to a near-150 page trade agreement draft, which scuppered the prospects for a deal after 11 rounds of negotiations.
The changes suggested that Chinese negotiators never “really connected with all the people who needed to be connected to in order to make the deal”, said Claire Reade, who spent eight years negotiating with China as a senior figure in the Office of the United States Trade Representative (USTR).

In other words, in the past, our negotiators were so laughably weak that the Chinese crew never even had to check with their bosses. It’s the equivalent of someone walking into a car dealership and offering a salesman sticker price... he doesn’t even have to get that deal past the manager.
I don’t know if I agree.
I think we had a good, fair deal last time.
The CHINESE scuttled the deal, after both sides had agreed to it.
Start thinking of significant trade sanctions Mr. President. The Chinese do not want a fair deal, like what was agreed to already.
Invoke sanctions, Mr. President.
In China, you make the deal first - then start negotiating.
Before Trump my wife used to joke that you could tell when the US was negotiating a trade deal because the US negotiators always returned wearing wine barrels.

Probably needs to make it known that if the Chinese gonna run out the clock and president Trump wins - well the deal gets crappier for the Chinese and better for U.S.

The Chinese must have been watching the Mueller testimony as closely as anyone.
Hopefully the prospect of being stuck with Trump will make them a bit more reasonable.
I’m been suspecting the Chinese are fueling the Democrats - after all - they have the most to gain by taking Trump out of the White House.

Exactly. The Chicoms have made the calculated gamble that not only they choose to fight Trump’s fair trade policies but they will call in the markets of every crooked selfish American from Joe Biden on down to assist them in 2020. Far cheaper than making a fair trade deal with Trump.
Means China will force Trump to accept a trade deal which is not fair to America.
This article is just offering an excuse to cover for the CCP’s dishonest and shameful behavior.
Considering the importance of these negotiations to the CCP, there is no doubt the Chinese negotiators must have been reporting back to their bosses at least once a day about what happened during the meetings. That means the party bosses must have known every little detail being discussed, and must have given their approval to every little thing the Chinese negotiators agreed to at the negotiating table. In other words, it is not possible for any of the party leaders to only find out about the terms after consensus had been reached by negotiators on both sides, as alleged.
The above is especially true now that the CCP knows we are serious so they can no longer act the way they have always done, i.e., agree to anything and sign any agreement, then just ignore it.
So what really happened? Well, reneging or going back on terms already agreed to at the last minute is one of the negotiating tactics of the Chinese communists. In fact, I read that they did similar things in almost every negotiation with the US in the past. The difference is, in previous incidents, our negotiators were so eager for a deal they just acquiesced to the last minute changes made by the CCP rather than faced the prospect of a seeming failure with a no-deal.
The Chicoms wouldn’t honor the agreement even if it wasn’t marked up. Time to deal with them for what they are - the enemy.
