Attorney General William Barr ruled Monday that being a member of a family harassed by gangs is not enough to qualify for asylum.
In a ruling that will likely block a large number of immigrants from lodging successful asylum claims moving forward, Barr overturned a previous decision made by Board of Immigration Appeals, which found that being a member of family targeted by gangs or other criminal organizations could qualify them as a “particular social group” worthy of U.S. asylum.

Definitely a good thing.
Our asylum laws were written for the occasional Soviet chess player or gymnast who individually defected while visiting the United States, not for entire nations to flood our borders, cross through other safe countries, and then demand asylee status due to climate change or abusive boyfriends. This sin't what our laws were written for and they never should've been allowed to abuse them like this.
EXACTLY - it was also for political dissident. Why the hell they would leave such a GAPING LOOPHOLE is sickening.
Barr seems like the real deal.

And why should we be expected to pay the price for law enforcement in other countries not doing their jobs?
They need to fix their own problems....not to mention I have to wonder how many of these gang claims are bogus.

I have a suggestion: outfit two Navy LPDs with consular, ICE, and Asylum judges with a platoon of Marines. Station one off each coast of Central America. Announce that asylum applications will be taken ONLY aboard each vessel. Have host nations set up secure zones for applicants and use LHUs to shuttle 200 applicants at a time. Those that are granted remain on board and when the numberof accepted reaches say 700 the ship heads for an American port for asylum seekers to be processed. Then the ships return to renew the process. No asylum seekers will be accepted at the border.
Combine this with chain migration, somebody with a loser in the family can bring over the entire gang in short order.
Not that south of the border gangs cared much for our rules in the first place.
Great news. Many of the asylum seekers are probably gang members themselves, gaming the useless system we have now.
We must throttle down the avalanche of immigrants to a trickle.

MortMan makes a similar point - gang members are routinely persecuted by rival gangs.
Naturally, rival gangs would draw much more fire than the average man in the street.
So that exception would tend to systematically select for more people with gang affiliations.
It also blows the rationale for asylum way open - from only exceptional situations of rare and extreme political persecutions, to common situations like street crime. The Obama Administration even extended “asylum” to those claiming domestic violence. They should go back home to Mom, rather than the US Government trying to become everyone in the World’s Mom.
Barr seems to be wanting to clean the stench of the past AG’s, Rosenstein, and Mueller from the halls of the DOJ...their culpability gives him reason enough....be a great legacy to rest on.
