I’m glad you brought this up. I was thinking of that story you’ve told before. They buy an expensive sailboat and sell it in the US when they get here.

“I have actually been snacking on biltong this morning.”

I made my first batch of that last year. Good stuff. Tho I cheated and used a dehydrator.

The definitive character portraying a man who will not leave is Aaron Jastrow in the Winds of War.

He could not see because he refused to look. He was gassed for his arrogant refusal to see the reality of a changing world

Heh... Buy your wife flawless diamond jewelry. Amazing what value can be worn on the fingers, ears and around the neck and wrists inconspicuously. (1 carat round D Flawless diamond has a value of $12,500 - $15,000)

Don’t ask me how I know. (Uncle had a diamond cutting facility in RSA)

Yes. Much better than trying to sneak lots of cash out via an intl airport and into another intl airport without declaring it.

5 years in a RSA prison as a paleface would not be fun.

Also not fun to have your hidden cash nest egg found and confiscated in the USA. You might even be subject to immediate deportation on the next flight back to the RSA, broke, and still possibly facing charges.

That’s a lot better than hiding cash.

It wasn’t my idea, I actually met South African ex-pats in the 1980s in Fort Lauderdale who had done it.

Were you able to turn the heat off in the dehydrator? If not you did not make biltong. I use my Cabella Deluxe 10 tray with the top tray turned upside down and the meat hanging from it on bent paper clips. Nice and easy no mess no fuss way to make it. First 24 I run ambient and then just set it to be 90ish for the next 3 days. Makes good biltong.

Those were some very clever folks. If one had the means a nice big power yacht would work, too. The upkeep would be about the same I imagine although range would be limited to fuel on board.

Let’s just hope the few remaining decent folk down there get out before it’s too late.

Diamonds are comparatively cheap in SA being a producer and all. Doing off the books transactions for stones is relatively easy as well. Flying back with cubic zirconia mounted in place of the stones raises no eyebrows at all. Rinse and repeat. You can move a LOT of money that way. If you are worried about the 10K transaction reporting thing go with smaller stones and separately transact for each.

I know someone who did that when they left Shrilanka. He manufactured Cricket bats overseas, bought his own product and sold locally. Easy transfer of his wealth to an overseas firm. Didn’t get all his money but got a lot more than the government wanted him to take.

“Were you able to turn the heat off in the dehydrator?“

We have an Excalibur that I set to about 100 degrees. I hung the meat from one of the racks with paper clips as you did. I ran it for 36 hours or so IIRC. It was pretty tasty. Lots of cracked coriander and black pepper. I used a touch of pink salt just to be on the safe side. Once again, cheating a bit, but it was very humid here and I was afraid I’d lose 4 pounds of good meat to mold.

Mrs. L and I are into food preservation as a hobby. So the Excalibur gets a workout. We make quite a bit of jerky and it does a fine job on yogurt as well. I just turned 4 pounds of blueberries we picked yesterday into fruit butter. It’s like jam but without the pectin to set it up. If you’ve never had it...well...eating that is one of the the most enjoyable experiences you can have while standing up with your clothes on.

All those wonderful berries cooked down to 4 half pint jars. Some sugar, molasses, cinnamon, nutmeg, fresh local honey, and some lemon juice. Purée it all up and cook it in a crock pot on low for 8 hours or so until reduced by about half.

13 minutes in a water bath canner and it’s shelf stable for a year or so. I’m going to hide a jar and save it for a really nasty cold day in January. It’ll be like opening a jar of summer sunshine that carries God’s love. From the field to the jar in one day. Can’t get fresher than that my friend.

This morning it’s going on some fresh buttermilk biscuits which I need to get busy making.

Enjoy your day.

L

I have a Coptic Christian friend from Egypt whose family was able to get out of Egypt and make it to the US using jewels & gold.

The Muslim Brotherhood was not friendly.

I knew some South Africans back in the 80-90s. They would send their kids to schools in the USA, and when they visited several times a years, they would arrive wearing huge amounts of gold and jewels. When they departed, they’d be wearing plated junk with glass stones.
