Tulsi Gabbard's $50 Million Lawsuit Against Google Is Another Attack on Online Free Speech
Reason ^ | July 26 2019 | BILLY BINION

Rep. Tulsi Gabbard (D–Hawaii) took a cue from conservative conspiracists Thursday, when the congresswoman and Democratic presidential hopeful sued Google for $50 million and accused the company of violating her right to free speech. The suit, filed in a federal court in Los Angeles, argues that Google infringed on the First Amendment when it suspended her campaign advertising site for six hours, briefly impeding her ability to raise money right after a well-received debate performance.

Many people on the right have recently made social media companies Public Enemy No. 1, claiming that they discriminate against conservative points of view. Ironically, Gabbard's suit throws some cold water on the accusations coming from her Republican counterparts, casting doubt on the idea that Google and its subsidiaries are systematically ostracizing Wrongthink along party lines.

"Google's discriminatory actions against my campaign are reflective of how dangerous their complete dominance over internet search is, and how the increasing dominance of big tech companies over our public discourse threatens our core American values," Gabbard said in a statement. "This is a threat to free speech, fair elections, and to our democracy, and I intend to fight back on behalf of all Americans."

Similar contentions were most recently placed under the spotlight during a Senate hearing last week on Google censorship. Dennis Prager, the conservative radio host and the hearing's star witness, lamented YouTube's decision to restrict about 20 percent of his videos, meaning they are invisible to the 1.5 percent of viewers who opt not to see mature content. Prager claimed that YouTube—a Google subsidiary—had targeted his video-making nonprofit PragerU because of a corporate bias against conservatives, notwithstanding the fact that the tech giant restricts much larger portions of content from various liberal organizations.

They do, Billy, but you choose not to see it.

Billy Binion is either a know-nothing idiot or part of the SWAMP.

Tulsi Gabbard, regardless of how leftwing she is, is a threat to the SWAMP's designated candidates. That is why she is being blocked by Google.

Reason is not reasonable. They are idiotic ideological libertarians. If we followed their "logic" then we would have completely open borders. Yes, they would like it if there were no welfare, but if we can't get rid of welfare, at least we can get rid of borders.

Of course this will result in the Democrats gaining complete control and implementing socialism in its entirety.

But at least the editors of "Reason" won't have to sully their perfect ideology which is no different than the glass menagerie in the play of the same name.

maybe after she gets her nose rubbed in it enough and loses the nomination she has absolutely no chance of winning she'll quit the dark side and come over to the light

More the former. Hard charging libertarians don’t tend to notice that when any entity, including social and private entities, accumulates enough power, that it starts taking in the characteristics of an abusive government.

Based on what I’ve read about her, Rep. Gabbard has occasional flashes of common sense/common decency.

Of course, there’s no sense expecting much out of her just now, considering this Army veteran has thrown her lot in with the worst lot of traitors and seditionists in our nation’s history.

As for the lawsuit, the enemy of my enemy is my friend.

Let’s hope Rep. Gabbard has a Damascus road experience — stranger things have happened, and she’s still quite young.

Google is a private company. They are not subject to the constraints of the First Amendment, those restrictions apply to the government. However, since it is operating as a public utility and it is has become a monopoly, then the government can regulate them and require that they act in the best interests of the public. This would require legislation and since the current state of affairs favors the Democrats, this will never happen.

There you go, and the same to Twitter and Facebook, etc.

Free speech would be NOT interfering with her postings and any other political postings, even if they don’t match the ‘culture’ at Google.

Actually what Google did was mess around with an American election by putting their giant paw on the scales. That’s a no-no and should not be tolerated. Period!

I’m concerned she’s going to pull a “sue and settle” solution the way environmentalists and the EPA incestuously worked together. Democrats couldn’t get something passed, so environmentalists sued. The EPA always surrendered, gave them money, and did what they wanted. And the EPA could say we had to in order to settle the lawsuit, but we don’t have to talk about it per pending litigation and/or lawsuit secrecy rules.

Think about the totality of what you wrote.

My point is this: Do you really want a public utility run by the current state of affairs (Democrats).

Things could be worse than they are, and would be.
