This is going to cost NY a great deal of $$$.
For a very very long time, the Courts have ruled you can’t write a law which targets an individual for obvious reasons.

How is it legal to pass a law that will help or harm only one person?

Pig in a Pants Suit - Hillary Clinton

Execution seems to me to be a bit much.

A few years in Martha Stewart’s old federal residence seems right to me.

Thanks SeekAndFind. Hey, you know who really dislikes scrutiny of their taxes? Eastern seaboard crime families.

“a person who owns a chain of international hotels”

I think the Trump organization just leases his name out.

A billionaire might normally have an income of tens of millions to hundreds of millions in a year.

Since Trump is over age 70 and nearing estate tax age, I suspect his children and grandchildren are the better income earning Trumps.

I realize Democratic voters tend to be math and logic lacking, but at least one Democrat should be able to make an educated guess as to Trump’s income level.

It won’t cost Albany a dime.

They’ll stick us taxpayers with the tab.

Article I, Section 9, Clause 3 US Constitution ‘No Bill of Attainder or ex post facto Law shall be passed.’ It seems to me that what NY is doing is in direct contravention to the constitution - which is no surprise, since the government bureaucrats have been wiping their asses on the constitution (with a wink and a nod from the supremes) almost since it was written.

Of course they can make educated guesses about his income.

They want to go on a fishing expedition through the tax returns, and bash Trump over what they find.

For example, I’m sure Trump and his CPA team have taken depreciation deductions over the years. The general public doesn’t understand depreciation, so Democrats could grandstand by saying he took millions in such deductions, and hint that there is something wrong with that.

I’m no tax expert, but there are other things, such as capital losses which can offset capital gains in some cases. Again, the Democrats would take something which is perfectly legal but claim that Trump did something improper with such tax filing issues.

That law is invalid and not binding.

Not sure what their argument is but "No State shall ... pass any ... ex post facto Law," seems clearly to apply.

New York can only pass new laws about returns filed after the time the new law is passed.

It is called a bill of attainder and is strictly prohibited by the Constitution.

The United States Constitution forbids legislative bills of attainder: in federal law under Article I, Section 9, and in state law under Article I, Section 10. The fact that they were banned even under state law reflects the importance that the framers attached to this issue.

The risk of tax return publication could be enough to drive other wealthy folk out of the state. NY doesn’t need another reason for people to leave.

Problem is it is not coming out of Nadler, James or Cuomo’s pocket personally its coming from the NYS tax payers.

It is not, IMO. Bill of Attainders are supposed to be forbidden by the US Constitution.
