PORTLAND, Ore. — Joe Fontenot walked away from his comedy show Saturday night with a black eye.
The Portland comedian said he was performing at a venue in Hood River when he was attacked. He said he usually stays away from religion and politics during his act, but he took a chance that night.
Fontenot said he was making fun of President Donald Trump's infamous statement about creating a Space Force when a man in the audience stood up and shouted, "Make America great again!" then walked on stage.
"I just said, 'Someone should build a wall around you,' and the next thing you know, boom," described Fontenot.
He said he blacked out after the man punched him because the next thing he remembers, he could barely able open his eye.
Fortenot said he thought his joke was harmless.
"I don't understand, like, it's not even a joke about Trump or anything like that, for people to assault someone else for talking is insane," said Fortenot. "Did that make America great again?"
He said in the 22 years in the business, this has never happened before. However, he said the incident isn't going to stop him from doing what he loves most: telling jokes.
"It's never going to stop me, absolutely not. I plan on telling the joke again next week," said Fortenot.
KATU reached out to Hood River Police for comment but did not immediately hear back.
Fontenot's next show is this weekend in the Tri-Cities.
Surveillance video of the attack is expected to be be released Monday.
Agree. My guess is if it even happened at all some leftie was posing as a Trump supporter and the “comedian” (and I use that term loosely ‘cause I never heard of this guy) is just taking one for the team.
Oh, wait... He wasn’t in Portland he was much further east... In the MAGA part of Oregon. I was wondering why he’d be worried about keeping his Trump jokes safe in Portland but I can see why he would want to be cautious east of the mountains.
