Frankly I’d be very happy to see plastic or styrofoam straws, cups, plates, containers and plastic shopping bags banned. A large part of the population are not responsible enough to have them without throwing them out of their car windows.
On the whole this nation is a bunch of slobs. I pick up a big bag full of trash from the highway in front of the farm every week before I mow. The same druggies, drunks and imbeciles who throw it out probably drive by while I am picking it up.
The plastic doesn’t walk to the oceans on its own. It gets there because some human let it blow free in nature, where it went into a storm drain, a stream or a river, and made its way to the ocean. It’s a human behavior problem.

Who came up with the idea of selling straws?
Red straws no less.

It's impossible to throw away a straw. No one throws away a solo straw. A straw is part of a product. It is inserted through a lid into a cup. No one removes a straw, tosses it into the ocean and holds on to the cup and lid to throw it into a garbage can. If there's a straw in the ocean, the cup and lid is also there.

Wear pajamas to town
Hardly ever shave
Wear filthy clothes
Never shine shoes
Throw their trash everywhere even in front of a trash can or restaurant.
Don’t wash cars
Use their front yard for a dump
Don’t mow their yard or keep their house fixed
etc.
Generally they are slobs without one shred of pride in themselves or anything else. They simply exist and prove any dead fish can float downstream. They are disgusting.
I’m seeing more slobbery in nicer areas.
Granted I’m not Adrian Monk like ultra clean but I have standards.

But, as always, this is based on extremely sporadic evidence; I would bet no more than a few dozen cases across the globe. And once people forget the premise, as seems to already have happened here on FR :-), it is likely to lead to escalation where plastic utensils, plates and cups are banned as well, if they could get away with it.
