Investors did not like what they saw in Netflixs second-quarter results.
Shares of the company plunged by more than 11 percent in after-hours trading following the companys release of data on new subscriptions that fell short of Wall Street expectations and company guidance.
Netflix added 2.7 million subscribers in its second quarter, down from about 6 million new subscribers in last years second quarter and well below the 5 million or so expected. The company actually lost about 130,000 domestic subscriptions in the second quarter. Internationally, the company added 2.83 million subscribers, well below the consensus forecast of 4.81 million.
Prior to the stocks reaction to the quarterly results, Netflix had been an investor favorite, rising more than 35 percent in 2019.
Despite the disappointing subscription numbers, revenue jumped to $4.92 billion, which was only slightly below estimates. Profit fell to $270 million from $384.3 million a year ago.

All the media will start there own streaming services..
And most of there in house stuff is not for families
When Disney pulls all their content off Nutflux it will be a quick swirl and flushing sound.
We tried to watch Wine Country. It looked like a fun premise. Wrong. We got 15 minutes in and just could not relate, even though the show seemed to be aimed at least to dome degree at our generation (50-70 age group). It simply was not relatable to our culture.
Unfortunately for Netflix, more and more of the content they used to carry is going to services operated by the owners of that content.
Unfortunately for consumers, the app eco-system for accessing those services using “Smart TV” apps, or even an Android box, is rather incomplete. Plus now you’d have to pay for multiple streaming services for everything you used to get from NetFlix. The market is ripe for some sort of convergence at least on the tools (apps) for accessing these services. I shouldn’t have to deal with 5 different apps with 5 different interfaces to access content from 5 different providers.
I hope President Trump gets into owning a television network when he is done his eight years in the Presidency.
The issue is that soon, Amazon and Netflix will start censoring movies they don’t approve. DVDs are not going to be sold in the not too distant future. Movies, TV and other media is being curated for content. LIBERAL movies and and ideas are all that will be out there.
PC Culture control. Not to mention all of the money that they threw at the OBAMAs.
We quit watching television years ago, the shows all had to have one of every race and at least on gay/lesbian, and the comedy wasn’t funny anymore, and even something tame like Seinfeld and Friends wouldn’t be made today. It is over, Netflix is just feeling the warning shockwaves, the big earthquake is coming. Investors get it.
I am behind the times. I remember when Netflix was a service which sent DVDs in the mail, then you would mail the DVDs back and get more in the mail. In the snail mail. What a concept.
Amazon is running a “pride month” line up of lgbbqxzy#$@ approved movies. they are about to lose another customer. p.s. I dumped netflix as soon as they hired b.o.
Netflix should go back to their roots and stream content from other studios, as well as DVD/Blu Ray rentals.
They dug themselves in a hole when they tried to shove so much original programming into their lineup, followed by jacking up the prices to pay for all of it.
We have gone to just the streaming and watch just a few shows that are mostly Marvel season or Hallmark. I’d get rid of it If I was the one paying the bill. In fact I’d get rid of Cable. Hubby is addicted to NASCAR, Tennis, golf. NO NFL, I had a fit over that and he stopped watching. We have 7 buried under our Flag, he will be as will some seniors in the family, we have 2 brothers, 1 US Army, 1 Border Patrol who will too. We have a good TV Antenna, cable is a waste of money.
And it’s gone hardcore Left.
Could it be that the Obama’s joining them drove off what few Conservative viewers they had left. They’d made a hard left turn in programming with Lesbians in every program, and this new season sees more anti-Christian devil/Satan type shows?
The commercials for the new shows are HORROR, but are marked Drama.
LGBT approved movies? What the heck??
how many times can you watch Brokeback Mountain??
dumped them when they hired the Obamas.
“We tried to watch Wine Country.”
Try watching the new Netflix movie: Murder Mystery (Jennifer Aniston & Adam Sandler).
It’s fun, funny, has a few twists and there is no nudity - some slightly adult situations.
We joined Netflix to watch the movie (one month free) and really did not find too much to watch otherwise...
When I logged in to end my subscription I was asked ‘why?’
I clicked other:’ I understand that Obama and his wife will be helping provide programming content to Netflix - this is UN-American and does not make America Great!’
Felt gooooood.
I will pe purchasing a Blu-Ray copy of Murder Mystery when it is released (someday).
Best!
Count me as one of the 130,000 cancellees
Interestingly, when I cancelled, they asked me “Why?”
I responded “Obama”.
It’s a shame because I used it a lot.
Never messed with them.
There just isn’t much that is appealing about Netflix’s streaming service these days.
Any streaming service that has TCM and a DVR beats Netflix’s classic film selection easily. Netflix doesn’t have very many recent films either.
With a few exceptions, their Netflix Original series and films are mostly garbage and full of leftist talking points. Blech.
First episode of “The OA” goes into a nude sex scene within a few minutes. From there on in, it’s just boring
He already owns MSNBC........they can’t stop talking about him!...................
