At a Tuesday night city council meeting, Berkeley became the first city in America to ban the use of natural gas piping in new construction. But that was not the only utility-related issue they saw fit to attend to. No, there was another matter on deck: Eliminating the gendered connotations of words like "manhole" in the city municipal code.
No longer will the streets of fair Berkeley be dotted with manholes, nary a womanhole or nonbinaryhole in sight. With Tuesday night's vote, they have all been transmuted into "maintenance holes," that highest, hardest glass manhole-cover finally shattered.

Worse is the ban on natural gas lines for water heaters, stoves, dryers, furnaces, and fireplaces in new residential construction, beginning in 2020. Homes will be required to be all electric.
How stupid is that when most California power plants have converted to natural gas?! Coal is gone, nuclear power plants are largely dismantled, and wind & solar satisfy only a fraction of the state’s energy requirements. All the knotheads have done is drive up consumer costs even higher in the name of Regressive Leftism.

But I think “maintenance hole” conveys more information than “manhole.”
So, I don’t mind this, granted that I realize the change is being made for silly PC reasons, not to more accurately describe the structures.
