In a statement released late Sunday morning, the power company said it will be conducting a diligent and vigorous investigation to determine the root cause of the incident.
Con Ed spokesman Alfonso Quiroz blamed the blackout on a disruption on the transmission side of the companys power grid.
Officials initially suspected a manhole fire that affected an underground transformer, but Quiroz said theres no evidence of a fire at this point.
The blackout stranded people on subway trains and elevators, and forced the evacuation of Madison Square Garden and cancellation of Broadway shows.
It struck on the 42nd anniversary of a massive power outage in 1977 that affected the entire city and sparked looting, robberies and other mayhem.
Saturday nights incident also occurred while Mayor Bill de Blasio was campaigning in Waterloo, Iowa, as part of his long-shot presidential bid.

There were a bunch of 42-year-olds that were there because of the previous black-out. Can I say black-out? Is that racist?
As you say...
The media is the message.
new yorkers have such an overgrown sense of self-importance, as if the whole was hanging on the restoration of their power from a relatively miniscule outage.
I don’t believe in “coincidences” much when it comes to anniversaries of disasters seeing a repeat of a similar disaster, particularly when human institutions and/or infrastructures are involved. I think nature can have true coincidences, on its own, but when human error or acts of some kind are involved, I question that it’s just a coincidence.
Motives? Not a clue.
It’s a BS answer.
Well, there's your problem right there. The blackout was caused by lack of electricity.
This was likely not a mistake or accident.

True and it could have been something very minor that started
the process and will never be found or determined.
Well it is certainly opposed to the receiving side of the power grid.
Jeez....
I am sure the folks who look for that stuff knew in moments.
We should start a rumor it was the administration testing a program to wipe out electricity in major cities on election day.
Just like 1965, blame it on UFOs. Remember the INCIDENT AT EXETER? It was in all the tabloids of the day.
The surge is over - for today. Didn’t they close a coal power plant recently? Maybe they could have used it last night . . . just thinkin’
Okay.
And who among that group has announced it was Iran?
ICE deportation raids underway in New York City, 'number of jurisdictions,' official says
We can have 40,000 without power due to a good wind storm and nobody notices.
Back to NYC ... if there was a transformer fire, there might have been birds or squirrels running around there that are now crispy critters.
Hopefully not some non paying customer whose power was cut off at the pole trying some DIY stuff.
42 years ago last night, most of us who were around were watching Charlie’s Angels. On the east coast the show went to fuzzy screen, then a tech difficulties card. A few minutes layer back to normal. A short time later they broke in with a special report. My brothers and I figured the blackout caused the picture transmission problem. We later learned they switched to a Midwest feed to continue the broadcast. Didn’t know at the time the networks had that kind of redundancy in place.
My mother and I moved to NYC a month later, 9th Avenue and 20th Street. It was the best year of my life growing up. I was 17.
