In the run-up to the 75th anniversary of the failed assassination attempt on Adolf Hitler, Germany stands on the brink of a pioneering restitution case which may have serious consequences: The grandson of one of the conspirators of the 20th July, 1944, plot and staunch opponent of the Nazis, is being forced by the authorities into escalated litigation regarding property confiscated from his family by the Nazis. He has uncovered Nazi methods that have never before been described in such a precise manner.
Should his litigation be successful, a wave of restitution claims may descend onto Germany from heirs of victims who had their property taken by the Nazis in the same veiled manner. In this regard, questions need to be clarified whether, and to what extent, these methods and facts upon which the restitution claims are founded were known to the authorities all along.
The video is about Count Ulrich von Schwanenfeld. The film was made by Hitler´s order and declared secret Reich material.
Ulrich von Schwanenfeld was an early opponent of the Nazi regime who advocated Germany's renewal on Christian-socialist principles. He believed early on that Hitler must be killed to overthrow the regime and that the aristocratic class must set the example by initiating a "revolution from above." He maintained close contacts with the Abwehr and Kreisau Circle.
Schwanenfeld served as liaison to co-conspirators General Ludwig Beck, Dr. Carl Goerdeler, Count Ulrich von Hassell, General Hans Oster, General Siegfried Wagner, Professor Johannes Popitz. and Professor Jens Jessen. He was devoted to helping coup leader Colonel Claus von Stauffenberg and was a close friend of co-conspirators Count Peter York von Wartemburg and Count Fritz-Dietlof von der Schulenberg.

Goodness, wouldn’t it be ironic if the modern state was held accountable for the sins of the past?
Pass the popcorn......
Accountable? This is stolen property to be returned to the descendants of its rightful owners, who heroically fought Hitler and nearly killed him. This is not ‘reparations’ by any stretch, it’s replevin, or conversion, or some damned thing.
This is restitution of stolen property.
The Crown Prince (Georg Friedrich) recently lost a lawsuit in which he attempted to recover a castle along the Rhine at St. Goar which was seized in the 1920s by the leftists.
Leftists, of course, live by institutionalized theft. It’s what they do. Nazis are no different. But I hope the prince, or count, or whatever he is, wins anyway.
Hmmm, that report is confusing to say the least.
As far as i can make out the Solms family has been trying to get their land back since 1989. They couldn`t proof that Friedrich Solms had been expropriated by the Nazis, and that`s that. All appeals have been exhausted years ago. No matter what new evidence they may find now it`s simply to late. No idea why Ms Oppenheimer would write about it now.
Besides, there certainly isn`t going to be a “wave of restitution claims” now. The Federal Republic of Germany has always been accountable for any Nazi confiscations, so whoever had reasons to sue has probably done so in the last 75 years.
The Poles of course don`t give a fig about what Solms did. That`s why his heirs don`t even try to get their land in Silesia back.
All in all it looks like sloppy, tendentious reporting from somebody without much knowledge of the law.
In 2010 I was with relatives in NE Bavaria at the Falkenberg castle/fortress in the village of Falkenberg.
The castle was purchased by the von Schulenberg family and somewhat restored between 1935-1939. The owner was appointed Ambassador to Russia by the Hitler regime, but soon became disillusioned and he joined with Claus v. Stauffenberg in the Valkyrie project, the plot to assassinate Adolf Hitler. As we know, the plot failed and the group was arrested and all were executed within a few days of the failed plot.
In 2010 we were given a tour of the castle by the great grandnephew of the Friedrich v Schulenberg. The family still is associated with the castle, bur only in a historic sense as he gives tours.
The castle is a hotel/museum now. Had my class reunion there a few weeks ago :-)
