Democrat presidential hopeful Eric Swalwell told CNN background checks would make us “all safe in America.” Swalwell said he went shooting with two veterans and Shannon Watts, the founder of Michael Bloomberg-funded Moms Demand Action.
He said, “What I found when we had veterans and NRA members and a mom who cares about gun violence, was there wasn’t much that we disagreed on.” He added, “And 72 percent of NRA members who have been polled said that they wanted background checks too.”
Swalwell did not provide the name of company that allegedly “polled” NRA members nor did he name the year in which the poll allegedly occurred. Rather, he said Americans need a president who will “ride that momentum so that we are all safe in America.”

How about we start with sound background checks on POTUS candidates and Congresscritters?
Because banning guns outright has woked so well for Chicago.
I hope this is not a prelude to announcing he’s become a Republican.
So let’s start by checking the background over every damn one living here, Swallowell. It’s called a Census.
Then let’s check the background of everyone applying for a job. And to vote.

"...more than half (56%) had either stolen it (6%), found it at the scene of the crime (7%), or obtained it of the street or from the underground market (43%). Most of the remainder (25%) had obtained it from a family member or friend, or as a gift. Seven percent had purchased it under their own name from a licensed firearm dealer."
Think about that - more than half got the weapon used in a crime illegally. Most of the rest, getting it from family and friends? That's a simple matter of convenience or history. The fact that the majority could be obtained illegally indicates that if you "close" the family/friend channel via background checks it really isn't going to make any difference. One, most people will ignore it. Two, hundreds of thousands of firearms are already out there having been gifted/sold already. Three, you'll just generate an even larger criminal enterprise in providing firearms to people who cannot pass a background check.
I'm not saying background checks are worthless. I am saying they do not make anyone safer, period. If a criminal wants to get a firearm to commit a crime, he/she/they are not going to have too much difficulty doing so. My state has had "universal" background checks for maybe 5 years or so. I think it has actually stopped maybe 100 people or so from buying firearms, of which I think maybe a dozen were actually valid, and the rest were false hits... Yea, great job guys.
In most places they don’t even prosecute the people who are prohibited when they try to buy a gun and fail the background check.
No BG check for purchasing an upper.
No BG check for purchasing an 80 pct lower.
Still no BG check required when mating the upper with the completed lower.
It’s all perfectly legal - for now.
The operative adjective here is "universal". Means that all private sales/transfers between private owners/buyers must be conducted through a 3rd party FFL dealer so that you/buyer have to fill out an ATF-4473 form and an NICBS will be conducted before the actual transfer can occur.
Translation - outlaws won't bother. Good guys will end up on a government list.
