The malignant environment of our nations capital sadly seems to unfairly brand America. The relentless dysfunction and self-interest promulgated by the media and elected officials spewing rancor into every headline and microphone all too often drowns out the quiet whisper of Americas greatness.
Moving from Nashville to southwest Montana, my wife, Gracie, and I drove across the country in June and disconnected from the news emanating from a tiny section of the nation. In doing so, we rediscovered a portion of Americas vast beauty and majesty.
Leaving Music City, we traveled through the rolling hills of Tennessee and Kentucky to the farmlands of southern Illinois. Although well-traveled, Gracie lamented sleeping through the one time she passed through St. Louis as a teenager and missed seeing the Arch. With bright eyes, she gazed at the iconic landmark as we drove through the Show Me State while making our way west.

DC is a rectal fissure on this great country!
The problem of DC is a human problem.
Democrats are eager to seize absolute power by all possible means.
Leftist judges are running amok.
Berlin was an exciting place before a lunatic seeking absolute power took control over Germany.
BY 1945, much of the once handsome city was rubble.
Very nice article. There is an intrinsic kindness to most of the American people. Without the media pounding on us all the time we tend to actually like each other. The thing that makes your heart swell with pride is how Americans turn up whenever others are in trouble. The Cajun Navy rescued everyone, not one of the cared about color, religion or political party. Church ladies cheerfully made sandwiches and helped all comers. We are Americans, we actually like each other.
USA is not DC. DC has become a land and a people onto itself.
That culture is made up of little men and women who change almost over night from a caring American who in order to move 'ahead' in the Washington hierarchy, they sell their souls to pupet masters of power and greed....for some reason the smug face of one such elected, Eric SawlWell, comes to mind as the brand of dysfunctional American politicians.
Back roads of America and small town news papers....
And, by 1962, half of Berlin was rebuilt and thriving. The eastern half, not so much.
I visited the eastern half in 1972, ten years later, and found many bombed-out buildings that had yet to be rebuilt.
We east coast (Jersey Shore) denizens are spending some time in the Blue Ridge- Shenandoah area. Nice change of pace.
We passed through Checkpoint Charlie in ‘62. There were still piles of rubble and lots of nazi symbols lying around. The entire scene made quite an impression on me at 15 about communism and socialism. Five years later I was in the Navy.
Where does the author think these politicians come from?
Company town, and that company is the government, and now they're talking about statehood. It would certainly be the wealthiest state per capita in the country but it actually produces nothing but trouble. I don't know what it is, but normal-seeming people seem to change after spending a couple of years there, and they couldn't be weirder if they started to sprout antennae.
When I was a teen going up to my parents summer cottage, I try to take the back roads. One day, I found this old A&W stand that served great hot dogs. I found many great food stands and even in Connecticut, when you get off the interstates, you might find a surprise, like a guy selling hot dogs in a tuxedo. This guy was on the side of the road selling dogs from a cart. Another hot dog stand is an old Airstream made to look like a hot dog in a bun that is towed by a Checker...
Great insight into Americans by the writer and you.
