BOSTON (AP) A young man who says Kevin Spacey groped him in a Nantucket bar in 2016 has dropped his lawsuit against the Oscar-winning actor, his lawyer said Friday. Spacey still faces a criminal charge. He pleaded not guilty to indecent assault and battery in January.
His accuser's lawyer, Mitchell Garabedian, announced in an email that the suit filed June 26 in Nantucket Superior Court has been voluntarily dismissed. No reason was provided either by Garabedian or in the court filing. Garabedian said he would have no further comment. A telephone message was left at his office.
According to the court filing, the suit was dismissed "with prejudice," which means it cannot be refiled.
An email was left Friday requesting comment from Alan Jackson, Spacey's attorney. Jackson has previously said the man is lying in the hopes of winning money in a civil case against Spacey.
The legal development could have significance for the criminal case against Spacey, legal experts say.
While there are a range of reasons why a civil suit is dropped so quickly after being filed, it could be an indicator a private settlement was reached and that the accuser may ultimately stop cooperating with prosecutors, said William Korman, a former prosecutor in the Suffolk County District Attorney's office who is now a criminal defense lawyer specializing in sexual assault cases.

Money talks and the groper walks
My first thought also, how much bribe money was paid? Or I should say, how much of a “legal settlement” was paid, as they draw up a legal settlement, in which no guilt is admitted, and no one is allowed to speak of the “confidential” details of said settlement?
I hate to be so cynical, but I bet there’s a legal settlement with big dollars involved.
Has Mayor Pete congratulated him yet?
Kevin Spacey will enjoy a comeback, mark my words. He’s too good of an actor to bury. This controversy will only enhance the creepiness factor that has served him so well in many of the roles he’s taken.
If I were accused and innocent...and rich...I would never SETTLE.
I would want the accuser to “face the music.”
Too bad Spacey didn’t have a congressional slush fund to pick up the tab.
Unfortunate he had to use his own money for the payoff Vs. the tax payers. /s
Yep.
Maybe someone actually found the accusers phone and he realized he was toast.
“Maybe someone actually found the accusers phone and he realized he was toast.”
Think we’d see Spacey retaliate if that were true.
This is a classic pay off IMHO.
Gropin’ Joe is taking notes.
That’s possible, but it’s equally possible Spacey had some witnesses that guy could deal with.
I’ve learned that folks who make claims in public, aren’t worthy of assuming to be truthful.
Others may know more about this than me though.
Not trying to defend a guy who is known to have done something.
“Ive learned that folks who make claims in public, arent worthy of assuming to be truthful.”
I agree. Look how many claims against Trump have proven bogus.
Innocent until proven guilty.
Hey Moose, Rocko, help the Senator find his checkbook.
Is this showbiz perv counting on dying an "innocent" man just like Michael Jackson did?
Easy to say when you're not rich and famous. Celebrities settle all the time by "buying" their accusers' "stories." Sometimes it's the most prudent course of action. You might not be guilty of what you're accused of but that doesn't mean you aren't guilty of something else you'd rather keep under wraps.
Agreed.
