Justice Dept. lawyer says on call citizenship question still possible for 2020 census

A Justice Department lawyer said Wednesday that the Trump administration was still trying to find a way to include a citizenship question on the 2020 census.

The judge overseeing the case scheduled a call with lawyers for the government and those suing to block the question from being added to the decennial questionnaire following confusion over a tweet sent by President Trump earlier in the day.

The conference call came hours after Trump tweeted saying his administration would pursue adding the question to the 2020 census after officials in his administration said the previous day that the government was no longer pursuing the effort.

Read a transcript of the call released by the federal court in Maryland here:

Of course it is because the BS published yesterday that had whiny-arsed FReepers all upset had NOT come from Trump. And HE is the Decider in Chief, not some unibrowed deepstate PR cretin.

The headlines should read:

SCOTUS: American citizens are not allowed to know the number of citizens in America.

I think they have until October to settle it before it goes to the printer.

Instead of asking directly about citizenship, ask an alternate question that requires them to list their favorite football players. If they put down a bunch of soccer players, exclude that person from the count.

Easy peasy.

Just print it with the citizenship question as the only question on page 2 of the form. If the issue isn’t settled before the census is taken, pull page 2 out of the packet and recycle the paper. Problem solved.

Section II of Amendment XIV inherently requires the census to have a citizenship question, since it requires:
1. every person be counted, and
2. Congressional apportionment by Section I citizens resident in the several states.

Maybe I’ll sue to stop the Congress from sitting until a census with the citizenship question is completed and the Congress can be apportioned properly.

Sorry, your welfare benefits can not be paid because there is no Congress to vote to fund them.

Do Democrats want to risk that?

Instead of asking “Are you a citizen of United States of America”, a better question would be asking to enter “Which Country are you citizen of”.

That would be less scary to non-citizens/visa overstays/illegal immigrants. And it would be more acceptable to the people in black robes. And it would get the same data desired by Trump admin.

Nah, they (the “government printing house”) believe it is they who are in charge but there is NO law demanding it gets printed then!

Very interesting. The District Court Judge said that he has promised the 4th Circuit that he would get discovery done within 45 days and proceed as a matter of urgency. That sounds to me that he has been hobbled somewhat and will have limited ability to slow roll this.

The plantiffs are squealing like stuck pigs, claiming that since the government said that they had to have a decision by 30 June, they win even though they lost on the Constitutional merits. not happy campers

The DOJ says that they may have a way ahead that will satisfy the Supreme Court and still include the citizenship queston on the 2020 Census. Since the remaining obstacle is just a process foul, I would be surprised if the courts or anyone else could insist on a wait of 10 years on an issue that has already been determined to be Constitutional. I can’t believe that the pathway to a 2020 Census enumeration is so complex and so rigid that it can’t be fixed within a year. Historically, the enumeration has occurred in June and July.

The Left’s carefully crafted scheme may be falling apart.

Why do I have to answer if I am a "Hispanic", but I don't have to answer if I am a Citizen?

Some form or another citizenship questions were required from 1850 to 1950 but under Kennedy, questions were left off.

I’m looking at some of those Census questions asking where each respondent was born and also where their parents were born, what language was spoken in their household, etc., so we knew who was living among us.......it also is greatly of interest to those like myself, who research our family history or research family histories for others.

No one has ever referred to us as “racist” for wanting to know.

BS! We also need to know exactly where people living among us are from and we always did ask some form of those exact questions from 1850 on.

No one ever called those running the census questionnaires “racist,” nor were we “worried about sounding scary!”

Our forebear's weren’t the wimps some people who’ve bought into today’s snow flakes!

Congressional apportionment by Section I citizens resident in the several states.

Not sure where you got that notion. Apportionment is based on the total number of persons, not citizens.
