Trump appears to contradict officials, says census citizenship question not abandoned

President Trump stirred confusion on Wednesday by saying that reports his administration is halting its effort to include a citizenship question in the 2020 census are “FAKE,” even though multiple departments have said the question is being dropped.

“The News Reports about the Department of Commerce dropping its quest to put the Citizenship Question on the Census is incorrect or, to state it differently, FAKE! We are absolutely moving forward, as we must, because of the importance of the answer to this question,” he tweeted.

The Supreme Court ruled last week that the question could not be added, but said the Commerce Department, which oversees the U.S. Census Bureau, could try and do so later by providing a different explanation.

But the Trump administration announced on Tuesday it would not move forward with the effort, with the Commerce and Justice departments saying the decision had been made to print census materials without the citizenship question.

“The Census Bureau has started the process of printing the decennial questionnaires without the question. My focus, and that of the bureau and the entire department, is to conduct a complete and accurate census,” Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross said Tuesday in a statement.

I would ignore the Court and print the forms with the question.

I’m not sure but let me check .... yeah definitely. “President” is higher than “officials”,

You can print the question as a supplement and add it to the mailing.

So the statements by his own administration, that they’re moving forward with printing the census form, are “fake”?

This isn’t the first time that Trump has not seemed to be in control of his own government. That’s what happens when you hire nevertrumpers as aides and administrators

One America News reported on Tuesday that if the citizenship question IS NOT on the census, it would potentially give California, a sanctuary state for illegal immigrants, 20 more seats in the US Congress.

Trump needs help from Republicans. Where is Mitch McConnell?

They could put the question on the forms and continue to argue whether the question would be asked.

The following site gives the questions that have been asked on the USA census since 1790.

https://www.census.gov/history/www/through_the_decades/index_of_questions/1790_1.html

The CITIZENSHIP question has been asked on the following census: 1820, 1830, 1870,1880, 1890, 1900, 1910, 1920, 1930, 1940, 1950.

The CITIZENSHIP question has been asked in the past census when there is a significant number of immigrants.

Therefore, we already have the precedent for asking the question.

I see no reason why the citizenship question cannot be asked in 2020.

I know it is difficult for government bureaucrats to dig into the files, but there are probably all sorts of reasons given in the past that would placate the Supreme Court today.

Great reporting (sarc)!!!!
Since when do superiors ever contradict a subordinate? If the POTUS states a policy position and a subordinate official states a contrary position it the subordinate who is contradicting. Am I wrong here??

“They could put the question on the forms and continue to argue whether the question would be asked.”

Obama just ignored court rulings he didn’t agree with.

In this case I question the notion that the Supreme Court is a higher authority than the President of the United States on issues of national and border security. Rigging the census so that it acts as an incentive for illegal immigration is certainly a national security issue.

There’s also the matter of all the non-sanctuary states and their voters who will be disenfranchised if California, New York and other sanctuary states are able to use their illegal populations to steal electoral college votes and congressional representation from legitimate American citizens.

This is not how you run a stable, peaceful Republic

if the feds proceed then 20 more calif liberal house seats are created.

if the feds simply delay, then the creation of 20 or more liberal house seats are delayed.

if the feds simply delay indefinitely, then the creation of 20 or more liberal house seats are delayed indefinitely.

if trump waits long enough, rbg kicks the bucket and trump can nominate another USSC justice. then trump can resubmit the issue and the conservative USSC justices will prevail (roberts or no roberts).

do undocumented immigrants have standing to sue the feds for failing to take a census (i doubt it, although one might derive some perverse enjoyment from seeing roberts try to argue in its favor)?

20 more seats in the US Congress.

That's nonsense. The size of the House of Representatives will not change. What will change will be the size of each Congressional District, where they are, and how their boundaries are drawn. California does have a large number of illegal aliens, and the total may change based on the presence of the question on the Census, but it certainly not amount to 20 seats. One or two would be my guess.

Texas, Arizona, and other states will experience population growth based on illegal alien immigration. Many have been moved into the Heartland and not so many in the Northeast. I'm sure that someone has done the analysis.

“I know it is difficult for government bureaucrats to dig into the files, but there are probably all sorts of reasons given in the past that would placate the Supreme Court today.”

Isn’t it curious that the DOJ lawyers only offered one, pretty weak, reason. Reminds me of Sonny Liston “fighting” Cassius Clay.
