The census and slavery: Why we count people, not citizens
The Chicago Sun-Times ^ | July 2, 2019 | Derek Litvak

For most Americans, the census is something none of us really think about, for good reason.

It doesn’t come around but once every ten years, and then it’s gone again. Besides a few stories on the changing demographics of the country, and possible changes in the number of representatives any given state is allotted, the census is usually in the back of many people’s minds.

That, however, changed with the arrival of the Trump administration. Seemingly out of nowhere it was announced the 2020 Census would be modified in a simultaneously subtle and monumental fashion. Wilbur Ross, the Secretary of Commerce, announced in 2018 the next census would include a question asking for respondents’ citizenship status. Almost immediately the potential question was met with a bevy of criticism, support and lawsuits. Opinion

Those lawsuits culminated last week in the Supreme Court handing down a decision in the citizenship census case.

States with heavy immigrant populations, which also coincidentally happen to be strongholds for the Democratic Party, would likely lose seats in Congress, funding, and a host of other things as a result of their “official” population lowering.

The fear, by many immigrants, is certainly well founded, considering the president of the United States opened his campaign with violently racist remarks against immigrants, and his administration has made it a point to manufacture a humanitarian crisis on the southern border.

If you’re looking for a “legacy of slavery,” look no further than the 3/5 rule. Not its explicit effect today - which does not exist - but the fact that the 3/5 rule crowded out a simple rule saying that you only are represented if you are a voter, thus a citizen.

Without slavery, the 3/5 rule wouldn’t have existed, and the framers could have simply said, “you are entitled to representation in Congress exactly to the extent that you are entitled to vote for Congress.

We’re trying to count all people. We just want to know which ones are citizens.

The following site gives the questions that have been asked on the USA census since 1790.

https://www.census.gov/history/www/through_the_decades/index_of_questions/1790_1.html

The CITIZENSHIP question has been asked on the following census: 1820, 1830, 1870,1880, 1890, 1900, 1910, 1920, 1930, 1940, 1950.

The CITIZENSHIP question has been asked in the past census when there is a significant number of immigrants.

Therefore, the we already have the precedent for asking the question.

Case closed!!!!!

It’s essential to ‘forecast’ the expense for schools, fire dept, police, THEIR benefits and salaries, teachers-THEIR pay and benefits, hospitals, roads, playgrounds, etc. (ALL od which are used by ‘people’ living here, whether or not they PAY taxes)

As it is, only US taxpayers are consistently and INCREASINGLY hit-up for services used by ALL ‘people’

Fair? NOT!!

I don’t understand what the problem is. As a nation, we need a count of citizens as well as a count of the people. The question allow that to occur.

Exactly! It is also critical to inflate the population of blue state Illinois because under Democratic mismanagement the state has lost 160,000 residents and is likely to lose Congressional seats and votes in the Electoral College unless illegals can be counted to cover the losses of American taxpayers.

This is why I am heavily armed w plenty of ammo, food, and power for at least 6 months. I also have 6 co-patriots who have specialized areas from medicine to booby traps. If ANTIFA or any other organization tries to bring down this great country, we will respond.

Yes.

Disingenuous claptrap.

No one’s saying only citizens are counted.

It reminds me, also, of the slave states that wanted their slaves counted, despite not bring able to vote, so that the slave states would have more representatives, ergo more power.

“When our country started, there was no such thing as an illegal alien. People were landing every day. “

I used to think that too.

But in fact, people landing were recorded and went through legal processes.

While we’re on the subject...
In the 1980’s, Larry McDonald and a handful of others predicted that we were headed to a very bad place.
Now, 4 decades later, those dire predictions are becoming reality. We can stop it, but time is short!
The shorthand for Larry’s warning is this: A nation can VOTE socialism IN. But history tells us that socialism ALWAYS moves to communist TYRANNY. And the only way to escape TYRANNY is to shoot your way OUT!

Wow! I never thought I’d see a lib media source like the Sun-Times come right out and back the Southern slaveholders cynical power grab. The 3/5th compromise should never have been agreed to if you actually thought slaves were citizens and entitled to vote. Neither the Northern or Southern states would have ever ratified counting non-citizens like British Tory loyalists or Mexican migrants in the census let alone letting them vote. This article twists history so badly to make its illogical point that it makes my head hurt.

Trump wants to count the illegals as illegals.

You got a problem with an accurate census?

I am old enough to remember when the Census had the question bout Citizenship.

IF that question is NOT on this year’s census, I am going to write in large red letters across the page that I AM A CITIZEN BORN HERE.

The author and his ilk of communists never criticise the. Countries and despots where they come from. No, because they love those despots. Author and their ilk should move to those countries and make life better there...they hate the U.S.and PDJT, so it should be an easy move...no, they love their money and are hypocrites to the core.
