Mitt Romney criticizes Trump — again — for defending Saudi prince accused in journalist's death

SALT LAKE CITY — Sen. Mitt Romney took issue with President Donald Trump defending his relationship with the Saudi Arabian leader who allegedly ordered the hit on a Washington Post columnist.

Trump said he was "extremely angry and very unhappy" about the murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi but claimed "nobody has directly pointed a finger" at Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, despite U.S. intelligence and a United Nations report saying otherwise.

Trump had breakfast with the crown prince in Osaka, Japan, over the weekend, but did not press him on his involvement in Khashoggi's murder.

"The President’s praise for MBS, the man who US intel says ordered or authorized the heinous murder of a WaPo columnist & Saudi dissident, sends the wrong message to the world," Romney tweeted Sunday.

Romney, R-Utah, also repeated his call for sanctions against Saudi Arabia.

"It’s past time for Congress & the administration to impose sanctions for the murder of Jamal Khashoggi," he said.

“Nobody asks WHY was Khashoggi was killed.”

Here’s my understanding. Khashoggi was an anti-royalist. This is pretty much an executable offense. Nobody has said whether he was actively working a network inside the kingdom or whether he was just vocal about his opposition. In any case, his delivering himself directly into kingdom property was an incredibly stupid move. Apparently he wanted some personal papers signed saying he was divorced. (It has been a long time since I read about this.)

My guess is some lower level people wanted to demonstrate their loyalty to the regime and took matters into their own, clumsy hands. It seems unlikely that his capture and subsequent torture was planned. If so, it was incredibly inept and the outcome was easily predictable. I find it hard to believe that the Saudi leadership is that stupid.

AS an aside, the fact that the authorities at the embassy felt empowered to kidnap and torture somebody means that such actions are condoned. The King would be wise to grant something like human rights and assure a public trial, thus outlawing such actions by his people. I doubt that will happen, though. The Saudi’s are holding so tightly to their power that it will likely slip through their fingers.

This creep is no better than the loony Leftists who have to invoke the name of President Trump to sell their B.S. or they would get no attention.

That’s his job as lead Bush League Republican (taking John McCain’s place)

He has to cover for the ones running for re-election like Flimsey Grahamnesty that are pretending to be on our side.

Romney knows the truth about Khashoggi was a terrorist supporter and an agent of influence for the Brotherhood. Mitt simply does not care because Khashoggi is an issue he can use to criticize President Trump. And that is far more important than helping to save our Republic from the Progressives. Of course people like Mitt never have to live with the consequences of their actions.

This POS thinks if Trump gets up ended he is going to fill the gap. That is his motivation. Picking him verses any of the dem candidates would be like picking up a turd by the clean end. I can never bring myself to vote for a dem but if Romney were ever nominated, I’d just vote down ticket.

Hey Mitt!

What's your policy?

Shun Saudi Arabia? Help support Iran?

OMG Does this pr*ck do ANYTHING ELSE?

Has he even introduced a single bill? Or is he just there to have “senator” on his resume and lob criticisms at Trump?

Mitt is a man consumed by bitterness and hatred. He directs that bitterness toward Trump, who is a visible reminder of his total failure as a politician. Every time Trump wins, Mitt loses.

We don’t have any room to bad-mouth the Saudis for this killing. Many of us older FReepers remember that our CIA, under JFK, cooperated in the murder of the South VietNam president and his brother. Today’s history books don’t tell it the same way it was told back 55 years ago. JFK was killed three weeks later.
