It’s a good one.

It’s about a long distance horse race.

If I remember right, Gene Hackman is in it.

I’d even through Quigley Down Under in there too.

Oh, ok - it’s a more modern western. I’ll look it up, thanks.

Ben Johnson was one of the all time greats. He was a real Oklahoma cowboy. He and Rex Allen had the best voices in Hollywood.

He refused to be in “The Last Picture Show” because of the profanity. Peter Bogdanovitch agree to take the profanity out for his character and he won and Oscar for best supporting actor.

He and his wife had a reputation as being unusually nice people.

The townspeople in High Noon were tough enough to survive and thrive in the wild West, but too cowardly to stand up to a few gunslingers? Right.

You nailed it. The Ringo Kid in Stagecoach was as tough as they get, but he was a gentleman and very respectful of others, particularly the ladies. He was at peace with himself and with the world. He didn't swagger around spouting vulgarities.

The Ringo Kid didn't have to act like a badass even though with one hand tied behind his back, and without breaking a sweat, the Ringo Kid could whoop any of today's crop of poseurs in a Lordsville minute. Yes, he was driven to avenge his murdered brother, but out of a sense of justice, not revenge.

Good point. The Outlaw Josey Wales is one of the best Westerns OR movies I’ve ever seen.

I like Bonanza and some movies.

Shane. A couple of the later John Wayne ones. The Magnificent Seven.

I was born in ‘68 so it’s not my bag.

It’s not unfortunate to me. We just like different things from OUR OWN generation.

I’m glad you folks love it.

My nephews and nieces wouldn’t like what I like.

It’s just the way it is :)

My main objection to Shane was the fight scenes. Alan Ladd looked like he was slap fighting in a gay bar. Next time you watch it look at how he holds his fists. Somebody should have coached him on that.

Good analysis of the character's clothing, BTW.

liked the portrayal of ringo in the movie with val kilmer (sp?)- tombstone i think it was- Very understated, but indefinably portrayed a dangerous man- Doc, played by Val- was also another awesomely portrayed character- didn’t brag didn’t tell and scream and swear- just let his guns and reputation do the talkin-

I liked the following exchange between doc and wyatt- even though it probably wasn’t representative of ringgo’s drive- but it showed that doc understood him in the movie at least, because that’s what kinda drove doc too- again, at least i nthe movie’s plot-

Wyatt Earp : What makes a man like Ringo, Doc? What makes him do the things he does?

Doc Holliday : A man like Ringo has got a great big hole, right in the middle of him. He can never kill enough, or steal enough, or inflict enough pain to ever fill it.

Wyatt Earp : What does he need?

Doc Holliday : Revenge.

Wyatt Earp : For what?

Doc Holliday : Bein’ born.

Val just nailed his part in this movie-

Tombstone

Ike Clanton : What is that now? Twelve hands in a row? Holliday, son of a bitch, nobody’s that lucky.

Doc Holliday : Why Ike, whatever do you mean? Maybe poker’s just not your game Ike. I know! Let’s have a spelling contest!

I laughed at this line- the look on Ike’s face after Doc said this was perfect-

All the actors did a great job in this movie-

Mark sure didn't grow up in the USA. My greatest goal as a child was to get a pair of tall black "combat boots" like the western cavalry heroes wore. I owned six-shooters that would go through roll after roll of caps. I watched "The Lone Ranger" and "Hopalong Cassidy" as often as I could, and close to every episode of "Gunsmoke", all on a cranky B&W TV. To this day, I love the deserts of West Texas and Arizona, and hum "The Yellow Rose of Texas" and "Red River Valley" unconsciousy.

You blew it on this one, Mark.

The author says in the comments, “Take the gunfight at the OK Corral. So a bunch of semi-famous-at-the-time guys shot each other. What’s the big deal? Yet there are all these movies about it. It is hardly a world-historical event.”

Four sheepdogs set out to confront a larger number of armed, murderous villains for the purpose of bringing a halt to their villainy.

Think they weren’t scared? I would bet they were. But they manned up and got it done anyway.

The author admits that her take might be a “chick thing,” and I agree 100%.

There are things that women must do if civilization is to survive, some of which men don’t get.

There are also things that men must do if civilization is to survive, some of which women don’t get.

Hud was filmed near where I lived. The store-keeper who is sweeping up the broken glass when the movie starts, because “I had Hud last night,” is Warren Anderson, a local TV celebrity back then and our next-door neighbor.

My favorite line in SYLS was when a son said of his father, “Dad’s got a heart of gold. But he ain’t got a single brain in his poor old head.”

Some wag once characterized Star Wars as “Wagon Train to the Stars.”

Stagecoach is a masterpiece as is the Searchers. I didn’t care much for Rio Bravo but the that’s just me. I love the Cavalry series and almost any John Wayne western. I also love spaghetti westerns and Once Upon a Time in the West is my favorite. My husband introduced me to his favorite genre while we were still dating. Prior to that I’d never watched westerns with any appreciation.

“Upon a Time in the West”

My favorite also. Have you seen the long directors cut?
