US Can Afford to Stay Calm With Iran
Townhall.com ^ | June 27, 2019 | Victor Davis Hanson

President Trump recently ordered and then called off a retaliatory strike against Iran for destroying a U.S. surveillance drone. The United States asserts that the drone was operating in international space. Iran claims it was in Iranian airspace.

Antiwar critics of Trump's Jacksonian rhetoric turned on a dime to blast him as a weak, vacillating leader afraid to call Iran to account.

Trump supporters countered that the president had shown Iran a final gesture of patience — and cleared the way for a stronger retaliation should Iran foolishly interpret his one-time forbearance as a weakness to be exploited rather than as magnanimity to be reciprocated.

The charge of Trump being an appeaser was strange coming from leftist critics, especially given Trump's past readiness to bomb Syrian President Bashar al-Assad for allegedly using chemical weapons, his willingness to destroy ISIS through enhanced air strikes, and his liberation of American forces in Afghanistan from confining rules of engagement.

The truth is that Iran and the United States are now engaged in a great chess match. But the stakes are not those of intellectual gymnastics. The game is no game, for it involves the lives, and possible deaths, of thousands.

The latest American-Iranian standoff is not like that of 1979-1981, when theocratic revolutionaries removed the Shah, stormed the U.S. Embassy in Tehran, and took American hostages for 444 days — and humiliated America.

Iran fears there are now no such American liabilities. Forty years later, America has no presence in Iran. It has long since given up on bringing Tehran back into the Western fold.

Saudi Arabia announced the war with Israel was over. Both are strong American allies against Iran.

Not only do we not really know what trump did rather than bomb, we have no clue how the allies responded in Iran on behalf of America

I think Victor Davis Hanson nail's it. Iran is desperate, we are not. The single biggest and best thing that's happened under the Trump Administration IMHO is how far our oil and gas industry has come and the fact that we're on the verge of becoming the biggest oil and gas exporter on the planet.

I've long said Energy Independence is this country's key to bringing manufacturing HOME and our national security.

Companies that moved to China did so to eliminate the expensive labor her in favor of cheap oil to transport goods back to the US. They did so on "cheap" Arab oil.

Well, that cheap arab oil ain't so cheap anymore, nor will it be a RELIABLE source if Iran manages to muck up the gulf.

The cheap, reliable and SECURE source of oil is on OUR SHORES and that's why manufacturing is coming back. That and American Labor is far more intelligent, reliable, etc.. than cheap, Chinese labor. We win in an even contest and PDJT knows that.

I support MY President putting the screws to Iran as hard and fast as possible. Iran will crumble under its own weight, it's just a matter of time before the Mullah controlled military turns on the leadership and I suspect PDJT knows that too.

Will be so glad to vote for him again in 2020!

With American economic and cultural power already squeezing the Iranian regime ever more tightly, why take the risks attendant with direct military action? Given enough time, the boa constrictor almost always wins, even against the most tenacious adversaries.

This is what happens when you have a results-oriented leader rather than one who is only interested in the enhancement of their political position.

The US should put a 25% tarrif on all goods from ANY country who does any trading with Iran, or ban trade with them all together.

Simply tell the world trade with us or trade with iran your choice. The mad mullah party going on over there would be over in 2 months.

Sanctions have never been serious, but somehow, under THIS Prez, it’s different. He makes it WORK, as he has his whole working life, getting things done.

Traditionally I take a verrrrry dim view of economic sanctions, but THIS time I really smell desperation.

I think they wanted us to attack, and I think that we can just let them sink.

We know Trump applied more sanctions.
We know Iran was warned about the pending airstrikes that Trump called off in the final 10 minutes.
We know Iran lost their internet yesterday, but can’t say if that was the US.
