The 5-year-old Woodbury boy who survived being thrown from a third-floor balcony at the Mall of America remains in intensive care due to severe complications from the attack, his parents said in a Tuesday update on their GoFundMe page.
“Up until now we have let our hopes govern what we have revealed to the public,” the post stated. “However, the injuries and severe complications have now resulted in more than 15 separate medical procedures or surgeries, including surgeries for two broken arms and a broken leg, removal of his spleen, procedures for fluid in his lungs and stomach, as well as for facial and skull fractures; and just this past weekend, he had a stent placed in a vein that runs through his liver because of the serious complications he continues to endure.”
The boy, publicly identified only as Landen, has been in intensive care since he was thrown nearly 40 feet to the ground by 24-year-old Emmanuel Aranda on April 12.
“While the miracle of his survival is what we celebrate and thank Jesus for every day, we must also acknowledge that our beautiful boy has been on a very challenging road to recovery,” the family wrote. “We are still unsure when our family will be able to return home.”
Aranda pleaded guilty to attempted premeditated first-degree murder and was sentenced earlier this month in Hennepin County District Court to 19 years in prison.
The Minneapolis man told investigators he went to the Bloomington mall “looking for someone to kill” after women he approached there had rejected his advances. He said he had planned to kill an adult before choosing the child instead.
Aranda’s family said he suffered from mental illness, though his lawyer never raised that as a defense.
I’m not even talking about bias or non bias in the prosecution... I am talking about the law in MN... How is it that 1st degree premeditated attempted murder only carries a maximum sentence of 20 years??? What screwed up law says, you plotted and planned to kill someone... and tried to accomplish it... but you can ever walk the streets again??

That should have a maximum sentencing of LWOP or Execution. Doesn’t mean everyone charged will get the maximum, but how is it the law in MN is set up to a point where the max you can get for this is only 20 years no matter what?
the sentence for causing an injury should be prison time for a long as the person is negatively affected by the injury.
I don’t even care if you scratched the person....
If you with complete premeditation decided you are going to kill someone, and attempt to execute your plan.. even if you utterly fail, and your victim doesn’t have a mark on them from your attempt.... The max sentence for that should be LWOP or Execution. It should not have a MAX of 20 years.
You plotted and planned and attempted to kill another person, that should not have a max sentence restriction of anything less than LWOP.

I have also proposed that if you provide false reports to the police or commit perjury or you are a cop or DA who lies or withholds exculpatory evidence you should do the same amount of time as the wrongful accused or convicted would have done, up to and including execution.

The penalty for ATTEMPTED murder should be the same as 1st degree murder.
The act was premeditated. The victim just didn’t cooperate by dying, as the perp intended.

California, New York and Minnesota are states I would not even drive through, much less buy anything to add to their enabling. Oregon and Washington and Colorado are running for being added tot he never go there list.

All expenses should be covered by the Mall. They should not have that burden, too.
