Iran is already in a ‘very dangerous’ economic position as US prepares major new sanctions

President Donald Trump is threatening to impose “major” new sanctions against Iran on Monday, ramping up the pressure on the Islamic Republic at a time when its economy is straining under the weight of financial restrictions.

Six oil tankers and a U.S. spy drone have been attacked since May either in or near the Strait of Hormuz — the world’s busiest transit lane for seaborne oil shipments that separates Iran from its neighboring Gulf states.

The flurry of attacks has escalated tensions between Washington and Tehran.

On Saturday, Trump said via Twitter that he would impose additional sanctions against Iran in a bid to prevent the country obtaining nuclear weapons. The U.S. already has sanctions on Iran’s oil industry and other sectors.

Trump added that economic pressure would be maintained unless Iran’s leadership changed course.

“We can safely say that Iran’s revenue from oil has been cut by at least two-thirds, so they are in a very dangerous economic position,” Cailin Birch, global economist at the Economist Intelligence Unit, told CNBC’s “Squawk Box Europe ” on Monday.

“They are right to kind of put on a strong face to get themselves out of this conflict, but they are not in a position to fight a war either,” Birch said.

Birch estimated that Iran had been exporting between 10 million to 15 million barrels per week in seaborne crude oil exports in the first quarter of the year. Now, this firm sees “nominal volumes” of 4 million to 5 million barrels per week, but half of that was just shuttled in domestic ports, Birch said.

Iran’s oil exports, the government’s main source of revenue, have been hit hard by U.S. sanctions.

There are many dissidents in Iran. Widespread economic hardships will grow their ranks and bolster their courage. The Iranian leadership may be caught between appearing to cave to Trump or fueling their opposition.

You better believe Trump has been supporting the dissidents behind the scenes.

I admit when I’m wrong.

I did not think the Iranians were the ones behind these attacks because I didn’t think any country would BEG for war with the U.S.

I now see they are strangled (good) and appearing weak would indeed embolden their enemies.

My assessment now? They are ####ed.

Where are the Europeans? And the Japanese? If it weren’t for Israel, Trump should phone our so-called European and Japanese allies and threaten to leave the neighborhood for good and let the locals deal with Iran from here on. Bring all our troops and hardware home to America.

The mullahs will never cave, and if it comes to unrest, they will just hire more Palestinian thugs to arrest, maim, torture, and kill the unarmed unrestful.

The Mullahs want war - nuclear war, if they can swing it - the scent of blood from mass death will lure their messiah - the 12th Imam out of the well he climbed into in the 7th century. He will then go on to bring all of humanity to Islam and then to Paradise with the last two humans alive obligated to kill each other. Such is the faith of the ruling 12er Shia mullahs.

Death is good. Life is bad unless it can bring about mass death.

They are the Mad Mullahs - they have a Plan. Do not even attribute the smallest Western motive to them.

I suspect that while the public narrative is focused on denying them nukes, the reason reason for the sanctions is to topple these crazy mullahs from power and free the Iranian people.

The ruling religious leaders are hurting for money and loosing control of the people. I think they need a mini-war with the US to draw attention away from domestic problems.

i think that if the send in a few suicide attacks on US troops and warships and do some terrorist attacks in the US or at US Embassies, they can blunt the US will to continue fighting and gain less sanctions.

I expect that they have misjudged the US.

France and the rest of Europe are riding out the summer and 2020. They must have their iranian pipelines to counteract their overtaxed, non productive socialist states.
Prez Trump is playing this one like an ace.

“The mullahs will never cave, and if it comes to unrest, they will just hire more Palestinian thugs to arrest, maim, torture, and kill the unarmed unrestful.”

The Shah of Iran used the same tactics when unrest surged in the 1970’s. The SAVAK, the internal security agency, made people disappear and used brutal methods to clamp down on the opposition. At the end of the day, it made no difference. The people, fooled by Kohmeni’s message, decided it was time for a change. The US (Carter) cut the Shah loose, and we know the result. I believe that something similar will happen now. Almost 40% of the Iranian population is under the age of 25. These young people want jobs, families and freedom, all of which is being denied by the Mullahs. At some point, a critical mass will be reached and the country will explode. The question is who will replace the Mullahs?
