There's no room for Columbus Day in Columbus, Ohio. Or for George Washington in George Washington High School.
Theres plans in the works to cover a mural of George Washington from the halls of George Washington High School in San Francisco due to complaints that its offensive and demeaning to Native Americans and African Americans.
The San Francisco school board is expected to decide next week whether to cover the image or paint over it, but theres no plans among top officials to leave the imagery in the open for students to view, according to several Bay Area news reports.

“...demeaning to Native Americans...”
I am part Tsalagi (Cherokee) and I don’t feel one bit demeaned....
Leave the great General and first President of our country up there for all students to see and then teach them American History....
When will it be politically correct to refer to such Democrats as "domestic enemies"? Or. do they get a free ride until it is too lage?
We have today in clear sight, the very politicians, school systems and MSM ("useful idiots" all) that KGB defector Yuri Bezmenov warned decades ago was core to their plans and we are entirely passive.
President Trump may be our best hope but he is a single, vulnerable individual who is without an effective opposition political party.
Spruce notes: "This has got to stop!"
That's us folks. My recommendation is for every FReeper to watch Bezmonov on YouTube and encourage family members, friends, neighbors, co-workers, etc. to do likewise. Then decide on future action at the local level.
Also the settlers marching past the dead Indian.
The artist was a Russian and a Communist who eventually went back to the Soviet Union.
So one may wonder if the mural was originally designed to paint a negative picture of Washington.
“Ironically, this was a WPA, Commie-painted mural intended to show a nuanced view of GW. The artist later return to the Soviet Union. Those subtleties are, of course, lost on the neo-philistines and woke iconoclasts.”
Excellent point.
In 1937, Victor Arnautoff became a member of the Communist Party.
Communist Victor Arnautoff’s largest project, funded by the Works Progress Administration (WPA) and completed in 1936, was a twelve-part depiction of the life of George Washington at San Franciscos new George Washington High School. In the murals, Arnautoff implicitly challenged the version of U.S. history then typical in American high schools. In depicting Mount Vernon, Arnautoff literally marginalized Washington and put enslaved African Americans in the center of one of the scenes. The mural presented a counter-narrative to most highschool histories of the time, which tended to ignore the existence of slaves at Mount Vernon, as well as the paradox of slaveholders fighting for the principle that all men are created equal. Another large mural presents Washington pointing the nation to the West. Again, however, Arnautoffs counter-narrative makes it dramatically clear that the way west was over the body of a dead Indian.
In 1955, Arnautoff found himself in the headlines again when a lithograph he had made, entitled DIX McSmear, was removed from the annual San Francisco Art Festival. The artwork showed Vice President Richard Nixon wearing a black mask, holding a pumpkin in one hand, and carrying, in the other hand, a paintbrush and a bucket labeled Smear. Arnautoff described the cartoon as a composite and symbolic characterization of McCarthyism, but festival officials removed it, they said, because it caricatured the vice president. The Nation magazine promptly put McSmear on its next cover.
In December 1956, Arnautoff was summoned before a subcommittee of the House Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC). Arnautoff cited the Fifth Amendment in refusing to answer questions about his membership in the Communist Party and other organizations.
He later returned to the Soviet Union and lived their until his death.
When I visited Monticello, I enjoyed learning about how Thomas Jefferson had his slaves learned important and skilled trades so they could be self sufficient upon being freed. The wisdom of these men (Washington, Madison, Jefferson, and Monroe) and othersreally was fascinating to learn about even more during my trip last month.
Hey everybody, what did those ‘white supremacists’ at Charlottesville, the ones trying to stop the removal of Confederate monuments, say would happen to memorials of the Founding Fathers eventually?
It was a lovely, gorgeous day when I went. I enjoyed the gardens and everything else there. I unfortunately missed out on the grist mill and I would have liked to have toured inside the historic buildings in Alexandria, but I had arrived in the area at a time in which I got to fully enjoy Mount Vernon itself but was that little bit too late to see those other two things.
At what point are the rest of you going to realize this is not a United States any longer and there is no option but to separate away from these insane people?
(Just haven't gotten use to this wireless keyboard yet.)

I don’t know that. Very interesting. And given the dead Indian, you might be right about the artist’s motive.
They have completely and thoroughly lost their minds in the United Soviet Socialist Republic of Kalifornia! (USSRK)
Yes. I despise that term. As much as I do “African-American”.
It’s all BS, long-winded, PC, and misleading.
Ask a British black man what he might be called.
“So one may wonder if the mural was originally designed to paint a negative picture of Washington. “
It clearly was designed to diss Washington. But practically nobody in the debate - not the leftists who oppose the mural or the conservative bloggers who support it - seem to understand that it’s an anti-Washington mural.
George Washington is the greatest man, ever. These asses can’t see that because they’re so blinded by slavery. So much so they don’t even know his actual relation to it.
I knew, of course, that this would happen - actually, long ago it happened as schools tried to change their whole NAMES.
That is correct.
He did not like slaves being split up on farms, he wanted an end somehow to slavery, and he allowed as a whole blacks in the service of the AmRevWar.
> George Washington is the greatest man, ever. These asses cant see that because theyre so blinded by slavery. <
Here’s an analogy. Most scientists see Isaac Newton as the greatest scientist, ever. And I agree with that.
But Newton made many blunders. For example, he wasted a lot of his time studying alchemy. That was a dead end. And he never did develop a good understanding of what “energy” was all about.
Should we delete Newton from the list of greats because of his failures? Or should we judge him based upon the time in which he lived?
