They may be on to something. If aspects of male culture lead to violence then it is a danger to society to have larger percentages of people participate in traditionally male activities. By their logic, as an example, having women involved in combat is likely to increase the number of violent women, thereby increasing the overall risk of violence.

Similarly, if male activities like playing baseball can lead to mass murder, then allowing girls to play baseball could increase the population of potential murderers. Similar logic applies for all kinds of activities.

While there may be some correlation between violence and gender, there are correlations between violence and lots of things, including race. If gender is a causative factor, then scientifically speaking one would have to ask if that was also true for race or native language, ethnic group, or religion.

I doubt the Washington Post, or most people want to go into that kind of conjecture. They are only willing to do so for gender since men are an easy target when you don't look carefully at the data. When you do examine the data more carefully using their theory, you find that it is a combination of gender and race, or gender and religion, or gender and ethnic origin that has the greatest statistical predictive power for violent behavior.

Do they really want to claim those correlations are driven by intrinsic characteristics and are causative?

You know I don't see just the word Men or Man by itself on there so WaPo's gonna have to explain themselves a little better but for now, I'm going to assume they're talking about Cis-Man, Cis-Male, Cisgender Man and Cisgender Male.
